Meta-analytic study of implant survival following sinus augmentation

Objectives: To evaluate graft types used for maxillary sinus augmentation and review success rates of dental implants inserted in these areas, analyzing the graft materials used, implant surface types and the moment of implant placement. Study Design: A meta-analytic study reviewing articles on sinus augmentation published during the last ten years. Results: 3,975 implants placed in sinus augmentations (with bony windows) were registered, of which 3,749 implants survived, a survival rate of 94.3%. Simple bone cyst : a case report

Background Simple bone cysts (SBC) are intraosseous cysts devoid of an epithelial lining, asymptomatic and appearing in the jaw. In general, SBCs are discovered incidentally and tooth displacement or pathological fractures are very unusual. Material and methods This study reports a 16 years old man that presented an asymtomatic radiolucent unilocular lesion in the right ascending ramus. Differencial diagnosis included odontogenic keratocyst and dentigerous cyst. One surgical intervention was performed and consisted in the curettage of the bone walls. A comparative investigation of differences in new bone formation and cortical remodelling after reamed and unreamed nailing was carried out in a standardized animal model. An oblique osteotomy of the tibia was created in 19 sheep, followed by intramedullary nailing. The medullary cavity was reamed ¶in 10 of the animals, while in 9 sheep unreamed nailing was performed. After an observation period of 10 weeks, microradiographical assessment indicated more intensive bone regeneration and better bridging of the osteotomy in the animals with unreamed nailing. Repair of osteochondral defects in articular weightbearing areas in the rabbit's knee. The use of autologous osteochondral and meniscal grafts.

Repair of osteochondral defects in articular weightbearing areas presents its own particular problems because of the low potential of hyaline cartilage for regeneration. Our first group of experiments on the knee of the rabbit confirms that the new regenerated cartilage comes from bone marrow which degenerates before developing into true hyaline cartilage. The second group of experiments shows that autologous grafts from the non-weightbearing articular area suitable for the repair of defects in weightbearing areas. In an third group, autologous meniscal fibrocartilage was used as a graft for the repair of osteochondral defects.
