Clavicle aseptic nonunion: is there a place for cortical allogenic strut graft?

Abstract We investigated functional and radiological outcome in 57 cases of midshaft clavicle nonunion treated with open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws over a 13 year-period. Intercalary bone graft was used in 42 patients; opposite autologous strut graft was used in 31 cases to provide mechanical support to the host bone. Patients were analysed using chart and radiological review and assessed with DASH questionnaire obtained at the latest follow-up. 37 patients were male while 20 were females, with a mean age of 35 years (63–17). The present study describes some of the applications of ultrasound in bone surgery, based on the presentation of two clinical cases. The Piezosurgery® ultrasound device was used (Tecnología Mectron Medical, Carasco, Italy). In one case the instrument was used to harvest a chin bone graft for placement in a bone defect at level 1.2, while in the other case a bony window osteotomy was made in the external wall of the maxillary sinus, in the context of a sinus membrane lift procedure. Anterior fusion for cervical spondylosis

Anterior fusion was performed on 138 patients as treatment for degenerative changes of the cervical vertebral column. The results were checked after up to 11 years in 122 patients and were found to be good in 55%, fair in 3895% and poor in 6.5%. There were complications of phonetic paralysis in one case, Horner syndrome in two cases, 2 wound infections, and complaints about the iliac crest in 3 patients. Kyphosis at the fused segment occurred 26.1% of cases, the average angle being 15.3 degrees, but it did not influence the clinical results. Mortality was 2%. Indirect Osteotome Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevation: An Update

The objective was to review publications on indirect osteotome maxillary sinus floor elevation (OMSFE) procedures. Studies published between 1999 and 2010 on patients with a minimum of 1 year of follow-up were analyzed. Fourteen studies were included. Indirect OMSFE is indicated for a bone height of 6–8 mm. More bone height was gained when graft material was used. Schneiderian membrane perforation was the most frequent complication. Survival rates varied between 93.5% and 100%. Osteotome sinus membrane elevation is a predictable and effective procedure for placing implants in areas of the posterior maxilla with low bone height.
