Chiral symmetry and pi-pi scattering in the Covariant Spectator Theory
2014
The pi-pi scattering amplitude calculated with a model for the quark-antiquark interaction in the framework of the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) is shown to satisfy the Adler zero constraint imposed by chiral symmetry. The CST formalism is established in Minkowski space and our calculations are performed in momentum space. We prove that the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied by our model. Then we show that, similar to what happens within the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, application of the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity to the CST pi-pi scattering amplitude allows us to sum the intermediate quark-quark interactions to all orders. The Adler self-consistency zero for pi-pi…
Explanation of theΔ5/2−(1930)as aρΔbound state
2009
We use the $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ interaction in the hidden gauge formalism to dynamically generate ${N}^{*}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{*}$ resonances. We show, through a comparison of the results from this analysis and from a quark model study with data, that the ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{5/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}}(1930)$, ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{3/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}}(1940)$, and ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}}(1900)$ resonances can be assigned to $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ bound states. More precisely the ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{5/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}}(1930)$ can be interpreted as a $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ bound state whereas the $…

Fast vibrational configuration interaction using generalized curvilinear coordinates and self-consistent basis
2010
In this paper, we couple a numerical kinetic-energy operator approach to the direct-vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF)/vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) method for the calculation of vibrational anharmonic frequencies. By combining this with fast-VSCF, an efficient direct evaluation of the ab initio potential-energy surface (PES), we introduce a general formalism for the computation of vibrational bound states of molecular systems exhibiting large-amplitude motion such as methyl-group torsion. We validate our approach on an analytical two-dimensional model and apply it to the methanol molecule. We show that curvilinear coordinates lead to a significant improvement in the VSC…
Diquark-diquark correlations in theS01ΛΛpotential
2005
We derive a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ potential from a chiral constituent quark model that has been successful in describing one, two, and three nonstrange baryon systems. The resulting interaction at low energy is attractive at all distances due to the $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ exchange term. The attraction allows for a slightly bound state just below the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ threshold. No short-range repulsive core is found. We extract the diquark-diquark contribution that turns out to be the most attractive and probable at small distances. At large distances the asymptotic behavior of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction provides a…
Role of Levinson’s theorem in neutron-deuteron quartetS-wave scattering
1990
The real part of the phase shift for elastic neutron-deuteron scattering in the quartet {ital S} wave channel, as calculated with the exact three-body theory, assumes at threshold the value {pi} if normalized to zero at infinity; that is, it does not comply with the expectations raised by a naive application of Levinson's theorem since no bound state exists in this channel. A description of this situation on an equivalent two-body level via a potential, constructed by means of the Marchenko inverse scattering theory, necessitates the introduction of a fictitious bound state. This predominantly attractive, equivalent local potential can be related via supersymmetry to a strictly phase equiva…
High precision hyperfine measurements in Bismuth challenge bound-state strong-field QED
2017
Electrons bound in highly charged heavy ions such as hydrogen-like bismuth 209Bi82+ experience electromagnetic fields that are a million times stronger than in light atoms. Measuring the wavelength of light emitted and absorbed by these ions is therefore a sensitive testing ground for quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects and especially the electron–nucleus interaction under such extreme conditions. However, insufficient knowledge of the nuclear structure has prevented a rigorous test of strong-field QED. Here we present a measurement of the so-called specific difference between the hyperfine splittings in hydrogen-like and lithium-like bismuth 209Bi82+,80+ with a precision that is improve…
Analytical wave function of an atom in the presence of a laser pulse
2005
We study a simple model atom that has two bound states and a continuum of free states, interacting with a strong electromagnetic field. In our analysis we assume that only the continuum-continuum transitions occur- ring between degenerate free states are important for the dynamics of the atomic system; adopting this sim- plifying hypothesis, we show that it is possible to describe the time evolution of the atom by means of an infinite but discrete set of first-order differential equations describing a formal model atom that has two bound states and a degenerate quasicontinuum of states. Moreover, these equations depend on a small number of parameters of the bare atom and of the external las…
First Observation of an Attractive Interaction between a Proton and a Cascade Baryon

This Letter presents the first experimental observation of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a multistrange baryon (hyperon) Ξ−. The result is extracted from two-particle correlations of combined p−Ξ−⊕¯p−¯Ξ+ pairs measured in p−Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV at the LHC with ALICE. The measured correlation function is compared with the prediction obtained assuming only an attractive Coulomb interaction and a stand…
