Strongly extreme points and approximation properties

We show that if $x$ is a strongly extreme point of a bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space and the identity has a geometrically and topologically good enough local approximation at $x$, then $x$ is already a denting point. It turns out that such an approximation of the identity exists at any strongly extreme point of the unit ball of a Banach space with the unconditional compact approximation property. We also prove that every Banach space with a Schauder basis can be equivalently renormed to satisfy the sufficient conditions mentioned. Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller Design Using Takagi-Sugeno Modelled Nonlinear Systems

The unknown system dynamics and upper bounds of the minimum approximation errors are adaptively updated with stabilizing adaptive laws. The closed-loop system driven by the proposed controllers is shown to be stable with all the adaptation parameters being bounded. Adaptive Tracking Control of Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems with Unknown Control Coefficients and Unknown Time-Varying Parameters

This paper investigates the tracking control of a class of strict-feedback uncertain nonlinear systems in the presence of unknown signs of control coefficients and unknown time-varying parameters as well as unknown disturbances. A robust adaptive controller and a new decoupled backstepping approach to stability analysis are developed by constructing a new compensation scheme. By introducing a Nussbaum function and a new type of hyperbolic tangent function, the effects of unknown time-varying parameters and unknown control coefficients are effectively compensated. A Modified Tabu Thresholding Approach for the Generalised Restricted Vertex Colouring Problem

We present a modification of the Tabu Thresholding (TT) approach and apply it to the solution of the generalised restricted vertex colouring problem. Both the bounded and unbounded cases are treated. In our algorithms, the basic TT elements are supplemented with an evaluation function that depends on the best solution obtained so far, together with a mechanism which reinforces the aggressive search in the improving phase, and new diversification strategies which depend on the state of the search. The procedure is illustrated through the solution of the problem of minimising the number of workers in a heterogeneous workforce.

Feedback vibration control of a base-isolated building with delayed measurements using h<inf>∞</inf> techniques

In this paper we address the problem of vibration reduction of buildings with delayed measurements, where the delays are time-varying and bounded. We focus on a convex optimization approach to the problem of state-feedback H ∞ control design. An appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and some free weighting matrices are used to establish some delay-range-dependent sufficient conditions for the design of desired controllers in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). We consider the functional $$J(v) = \int_\varOmega\bigl[f\bigl(|\nabla v|\bigr) - v\bigr] dx, $$ where Ω is a bounded domain and f:[0,+∞)→ℝ is a convex function vanishing for s∈[0,σ], with σ>0. We prove that a minimizer u of J satisfies an equation of the form $$\min\bigl(F\bigl(\nabla u, D^2 u\bigr), |\nabla u|-\sigma\bigr)=0 $$ in the viscosity sense.

Rates of convergence to equilibrium for collisionless kinetic equations in slab geometry

This work deals with free transport equations with partly diffuse stochastic boundary operators in slab geometry. Such equations are governed by stochastic semigroups in $L^{1}$ spaces$.\ $We prove convergence to equilibrium at the rate $O\left( t^{-\frac{k}{2(k+1)+1}}\right) \ (t\rightarrow +\infty )$ for $L^{1}$ initial data $g$ in a suitable subspace of the domain of the generator $T$ where $k\in \mathbb{N}$ depends on the properties of the boundary operators near the tangential velocities to the slab. Abstract Dynamic shakedown for a rate-independent material with internal variables is addressed in the hypothesis that the load values are restricted to those of a specified load history of finite or even infinite duration, thus ruling out the possibility—typical of classical shakedown theory—of indefinite load repetitions.
