Shape identification in inverse medium scattering problems with a single far-field pattern

Consider time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle $D\subset {\mathbb R}^N$ embedded in a homogeneous background medium. The index of refraction characterizing the material inside $D$ is supposed to be Holder continuous near the corners. If $D\subset {\mathbb R}^2$ is a convex polygon, we prove that its shape and location can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern incited by a single incident wave at a fixed frequency. In dimensions $N \geq 3$, the uniqueness applies to penetrable scatterers of rectangular type with additional assumptions on the smoothness of the contrast. A Stieltjes Approach to Static Hedges

Static hedging of complicated payoff structures by standard instruments becomes increasingly popular in finance. The classical approach is developed for quite regular functions, while for less regular cases, generalized functions and approximation arguments are used. In this note, we discuss the regularity conditions in the classical decomposition formula due to P. Carr and D. Madan (in Jarrow ed, Volatility, pp. 417–427, Risk Publ., London, 1998) if the integrals in this formula are interpreted as Lebesgue integrals with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Operator (Quasi-)Similarity, Quasi-Hermitian Operators and All that

Motivated by the recent developments of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics, we analyze the structure generated by unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. To that effect, we consider the notions of similarity and quasi-similarity between operators and explore to what extent they preserve spectral properties. Then we study quasi-Hermitian operators, bounded or not, that is, operators that are quasi-similar to their adjoint and we discuss their application in pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Finally, we extend the analysis to operators in a partial inner product space (pip-space), in particular the scale of Hilbert space s generated by a single unbounded metric operator.

Solvability of the divergence equation implies John via Poincaré inequality

Abstract Let Ω ⊂ R 2 be a bounded simply connected domain. We show that, for a fixed (every) p ∈ ( 1 , ∞ ) , the divergence equation div v = f is solvable in W 0 1 , p ( Ω ) 2 for every f ∈ L 0 p ( Ω ) , if and only if Ω is a John domain, if and only if the weighted Poincare inequality ∫ Ω | u ( x ) − u Ω | q d x ≤ C ∫ Ω | ∇ u ( x ) | q  dist  ( x , ∂ Ω ) q d x holds for some (every) q ∈ [ 1 , ∞ ) . This gives a positive answer to a question raised by Russ (2013) in the case of bounded simply connected domains. In higher dimensions similar results are proved under some additional assumptions on the domain in question.

Isometries between spaces of multiple Dirichlet series

Abstract In this paper we study spaces of multiple Dirichlet series and their properties. We set the ground of the theory of multiple Dirichlet series and define the spaces H ∞ ( C + k ) , k ∈ N , of convergent and bounded multiple Dirichlet series on C + k . We give a representation for these Banach spaces and prove that they are all isometrically isomorphic, independently of the dimension. The analogous result for A ( C + k ) , k ∈ N , which are the spaces of multiple Dirichlet series that are convergent on C + k and define uniformly continuous functions, is obtained.

On the dynamics of disobedience: experimental investigations of defying unjust authority.

Across six Experimental conditions with university student participants (N=600), we examined some of the dynamics underlying expressed defiance to unjust authority. Results revealed disobedience was best enacted by participants low in right-wing authoritarianism and was more likely to occur when: 1) in physical proximity of other rebels, 2) the authority made two demanding requests instead of one, and 3) there had been an earlier opposition to injustice. Results are discussed within the theoretical framework of bounded rationality.

Equivalence of viscosity and weak solutions for a $p$-parabolic equation

AbstractWe study the relationship of viscosity and weak solutions to the equation $$\begin{aligned} \smash {\partial _{t}u-\varDelta _{p}u=f(Du)}, \end{aligned}$$ ∂ t u - Δ p u = f ( D u ) , where $$p>1$$ p > 1 and $$f\in C({\mathbb {R}}^{N})$$ f ∈ C ( R N ) satisfies suitable assumptions. Our main result is that bounded viscosity supersolutions coincide with bounded lower semicontinuous weak supersolutions. Moreover, we prove the lower semicontinuity of weak supersolutions when $$p\ge 2$$ p ≥ 2 .

Hölder regularity for the gradient of the inhomogeneous parabolic normalized p-Laplacian

In this paper, we study an evolution equation involving the normalized [Formula: see text]-Laplacian and a bounded continuous source term. The normalized [Formula: see text]-Laplacian is in non-divergence form and arises for example from stochastic tug-of-war games with noise. We prove local [Formula: see text] regularity for the spatial gradient of the viscosity solutions. The proof is based on an improvement of flatness and proceeds by iteration.
