Mesoporous silicon is a biocompatible, biodegradable material that is receiving increased attention for pharmaceutical applications due to its extensive specific surface. This feature enables to load a variety of drugs in mesoporous silicon devices by simple adsorption-based procedures. Solid-phase extraction based on ground methacrylate monolith modified with gold nanoparticles for isolation of proteins

In this study, a novel polymeric material functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for isolation of proteins. The sorbent was synthesized from a powdered poly(glycidyl-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) monolith, and modified with ammonia, followed by immobilization of AuNPs on the pore surface of the material. Characterization of the binding of benzodiazepines to human serum albumin

The binding of eleven benzodiazepine derivatives to human serum albumin (HSA) was determined by means of sephadex gel filtration. The albumin binding of the substances was characterized by the percentage of bound drug, the binding constants k +, K 1 and m, the number of binding sites per albumin molecule, and the free binding energy. Under the conditions chosen in these experiments there seems to exist only one binding site of the same type for all investigated benzodiazepines at the HSA molecule. The affinities of the benzodiazepines to this binding site are very different. It is discussed which part of the benzodiazepine molecule represents the main binding group.

Thermal Aggregation of Bovine Serum Albumin in Trehalose and Sucrose Aqueous Solutions

We report results of static and dynamic light scattering measurements performed on bovine serum albumin (BSA) in saccharide (trehalose and sucrose) solutions. Our aim is to study the effects of the two disaccharides on the first steps of thermal aggregation of BSA in aqueous solutions at two protein concentrations (1 and 30 mg/mL) at increasing sugar/water ratio. Results show that sugars modify early stages of aggregation mainly by perturbing the thermodynamic behavior of the solvent (i.e., general solvent effects) without involving direct, specific sugar-protein interactions. Effects of physico-chemical parameters of a model wine on the binding of γ-decalactone on bovine serum albumin

Abstract To understand the effect of temperature, pH and the composition of alcoholic beverages in flavour-protein interactions, the binding of γ-decalactone to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated using the equilibrium dialysis method. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the affinity of aroma compound for BSA is higher at 10 °C than at 20 and 30 °C, while the number of binding sites (n = 6–7) is not modified at the three temperatures. pH did not have any appreciable effect on flavour binding in the presence of ethanol, but it was observed that a decrease of 1.8 pH unit reduces binding by 40% in its absence. Widespread diminishing anthropogenic effects on calcium in freshwaters

Calcium (Ca) is an essential element for almost all living organisms. Here, we examined global variation and controls of freshwater Ca concentrations, using 440 599 water samples from 43 184 inland water sites in 57 countries. We found that the global median Ca concentration was 4.0 mg L−1 with 20.7% of the water samples showing Ca concentrations ≤ 1.5 mg L−1 , a threshold considered critical for the survival of many Ca-demanding organisms. Spatially, freshwater Ca concentrations were strongly and proportionally linked to carbonate alkalinity, with the highest Ca and carbonate alkalinity in waters with a pH around 8.0 and decreasing in concentrations towards lower pH.
