Evolution of grain-size distribution of pumice sands in 1-D compression

Abstract Crushing is one of the micromechanisms that govern the mechanical behaviour of sands at medium-high stresses. It depends on mineralogy, form and strength of single particle, mean stress level, coordination number, time, etc.. It causes changes of grain-size distribution, porosity, number and type of grain contacts, fabric, structure of the material, etc.. Results of an experimental research on the crushing of pumice sands compressed under 1-D conditions to vertical effective stresses σ′v up to 100MPa are reported here. Determination of lifetime probabilities of carbon fibre composite plates and pressure vessels for hydrogen storage

International audience; It is shown that an analogy can be made between the failure of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced epoxy plates and filament wound carbon fibre composite pressure vessels and that their strengths and failure probabilities can be determined. Fibres in filament wound composite structures are placed on geodesic paths around the mandrel, which becomes the liner; so that when the structure is pressurised the fibres are only subjected to tensile forces, as in a unidirectional composite. In search of functions involved in the regulation of gene amplification, and given the relevance of chromosome breakage in initiating the process, we analyzed the gene amplification ability of cells hypersensitive to inducers of DNA double-strand breaks and defective in cell cycle control: two human fibroblast strains derived from patients affected by ataxia telangiectasia (AT) and two hamster mutant cell lines belonging to complementation group XRCC8 of the rodent X-ray-sensitive mutants. We consider reversible breaking of adhesion bonds or folding of proteins under the influence of a constant external force. We discuss the stochastic properties of the unbinding/rebinding events and analyze their mean number and their variance in the framework of simple two-state models. In the calculations, we exploit the analogy to single molecule fluorescence and particularly between unbinding/rebinding and photon emission events. Environmental fluctuation models are used to describe deviations from Markovian behavior. This work aims to investigate the stability of aerobic granular sludge in the long term, focusing on the clogging of the granular sludge porosity exerted by the extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). The effects of different cycle lengths (short and long-term cycle) on the granular sludge stability were investigated. Results obtained outlined that during the short duration cycle, the formation and breakage of the aerobic granules were continuously observed. During this period, the excess of EPS production contributed to the clogging of the granules porosity, causing their breakage in the long run. Fluorescence in situ hybridization mapping of fully integrated human BAC clones to primate chromosomes, combined with precise breakpoint localization by PCR analysis of flow-sorted chromosomes, was used to analyze the evolutionary rearrangements of the human 3q21.3-syntenic region in orangutan, siamang gibbon, and silvered-leaf monkey. Three independent evolutionary breakpoints were localized within a 230-kb segment contained in BACs RP11-93K22 and RP11-77P16. Abasic sites represent ubiquitous DNA lesions that arise spontaneously or are induced by DNA-damaging agents. They block DNA replication and are considered to be cytotoxic and mutagenic. The key enzymes involved in the repair of abasic sites are apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) endonucleases which process these lesions in an error-free mechanism. Si illustrano i risultati di uno studio sperimentale sugli effetti dipendenti dal tempo di sabbie carbonatiche bioclastiche sottoposte a compressione monodimensionale. La sperimentazione è stata eseguita su materiale asciutto ricostituito in laboratorio. Per confronto una serie di prove è stata eseguita anche su sabbie di quarzo e di pomice. Il coefficiente di compressione secondaria C aumenta con la tensione verticale applicata v, se quest’ultima viene applicata interamente fin dall’inizio, anziché per incrementi successivi. Rotor bar breakage data obtained from fatigue test

The data hereby provided was acquired during a fatigue test developed at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universitat Politècnica de València (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain) in 2011 by PhD student Vicente Climente-Alarcon under supervision of Prof. Martin Riera-Guasp. The fatigue test involved subjecting a 1.5 kW, 1 pole pair induction motor to severe cycling until a bar breakage naturally developed. The cycling consisted of a Direct-on-line (DOL) startup followed by a stationary operation period of at least 10 seconds. A plug stopping was added at the later stages of the test.
