2021

espanolOne of the most uncontrolled and wides-pread sources of misinformation are the instant messaging platforms, mainly due to the privacy of the communication spaces created in them. The dissemination of false news on these networks makes it difficult to detect them and thus complicates the task of fact-checking. Both WhatsApp and Tele-gram were used and integrated in the elec-toral campaign of the previous elections in the United States (Journell, 2017; Allcott & Gentzkow, 2017), in the United Kingdom on the occasion of the Brexit (Kucharski 2016), in Brazil (Novomisky, 2018), and recently in the autonomous elections of Andalusia (Spain) (Viejo, 2018). This research takes as a case stud…

LES 50. panta piemērošanas problēmas

2019

A Differentiated European Union

2020

Differentiation in the EU has substantially increased. It does not only refer to instances of (differentiation in) integration, but also (potential) disintegration. Differentiation can often be causally traced back to crises, yet it should not be equated with ‘crisis’. However, the literature has only scarcely discussed the putative link between crisis and differentiated integration. Fundamentally, demands for differentiation need to be treated as both a cause and an effect of integration. Thus, differentiation should be acknowledged as a persistent feature of European integration. The chapter discusses the development of differentiation in European integration and reflects upon the scholar…

Fuzzy Identities in (Dis)Integrating Europe: Discursive Identifications of Poles in Britain Following Brexit

2019

This study explores the fuzzy discursive identifications of Polish residents in Britain following the Brexit referendum by using a corpus of Polish-language glocal media materials (Moja.Wyspa.co.uk). Fuzziness is defined and operationalized on three levels: with respect to (1) online media technologies (global/local; above-/below-the-line) that allow diverse voices; (2) identity positions of non-native residents (Polish migrants as EU citizens at a destabilizing moment) who are left with the sense of anomie and “in-betweenness”; (3) discursive strategies of self-presentation mobilized in the ongoing processes of identification, whose analysis sometimes transcends classificatory grids offere…

Theresa May’s Representation of Reality in her Brexit Speeches

2020

This study analyses Theresa May’s three seminal Brexit speeches. These describe the kind of desirable post-Brexit EU-UK relationship that she envisioned, and together constitute a corpus of 18,532 words. The speeches can be considered as landmarks on a timeline that was initially meant to lead to the delivery of Brexit. It is hypothesized that there may be meaningful differences between the speeches, and that these affect the representation of reality. These in turn would have a bearing on May’s discursive self-representation as either an individualized or a collectivized social actor. To account for such representational values, the study draws on Halliday’s Transitivity System (1994), sta…
