CFD approach for the induced effects of free wake past rivulets on cables of stayed bridges

2009

Large-amplitude oscillations of stayed bridge cables appear under the combined effects of crosswind and rain. "Wave-like" oscillations along the whole cable length are born with large amplitudes even under low-speed wind and only the presence of the rain rivulet motion on the cable cross-section which guarantees an "all-or-none" amplification of the dynamic response of the cable. Even though this peculiar behavior has been studied, in a recent past, through dynamic and structural approaches, the phenomenon is not yet quite well understood, i.e., the quasi-cyclic oscillations seem to be activated to events (rain rivulets motion along the cables) compromising the circumferential geometry shap…

An Evidence of Modernity: Eleonora Duse's Library

2010

Even though Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) referred to her books as her own artistic wardrobe, her most highly-valued possessions, scholars and biographers have insisted on neglecting her library and, what’s more, it had for years been considered lost forever. In this article Anna Sica explains the value of the founding of the Murray Edwards Eleonora Duse Collection in Cambridge. She specifically refers to a selection of books which have been renamed ‘Cleopatra’s Books’. They are remarkable examples which are representative of Duse’s library as a whole and lay bare the roots of Duse’s intellectual evolution. Many have believed the romantic notion that Duse acted out her own personal life on stag…

Brücke, Grenzstein, Smaragd...Metaphorische Darstellungen Schlesiens und seiner Bewohner

2020

Abstract The article shows a metaphoric portrayal of the Silesia region. The author analyses metaphors which are being used to describe and characterize this region, namely Silesia as a bridge, a boundary stone, a pear tree, a smaragd and other figures. The analysis shows that the metaphors express the multicultural character of Silesia. They are predominantly very positive assessed. Furthermore, the author analyses metaphors which are being used to characterize the inhabitants of Silesia. The analysis shows that this metaphors express a positive as well as a critical perception of this population.

Dark consequences of social media-induced fear of missing out (FoMO): Social media stalking, comparisons, and fatigue

2021

Research on the dark side of social media usage has explored the fear of missing out (FoMO), social media fatigue (fatigue), social media stalking (stalking), and online social comparison (social comparison) independently. Accordingly, the complex interrelationships among these phenomena have remained understudied, creating a chasm that hinders a clearer understanding of their drivers and the potential counterstrategies to mitigate the collateral damage they may cause. We attempt to bridge this gap by drawing upon the theory of social comparison and the theory of compensatory internet use to formulate a framework that hypothesizes the mechanism of interaction among these negative fallouts. …

Detection and localisation of disulphide bonds in a synthetic peptide reproducing the sequence 1-30 of Par j 1.0101 by electrospray ionisation mass s…

2001

The structural characterisation of a synthetic peptide reproducing the sequence 1–30 of Par j 1.0101, a major allergenic protein present in the pollen of Parietaria judaica, by combined use of chemical and enzymatic cleavage, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), is described. Direct ESI-MS of the synthetic peptide after reaction with methyl iodide showed that the product is a mixture of two peptides: one form in which two out of the four cysteine residues present in the sequence are oxidised and a minor amount of another form in which all the cysteines are fully reduced. It was ascertained, using the combined…

On first exit times and their means for Brownian bridges

2017

For a Brownian bridge from $0$ to $y$ we prove that the mean of the first exit time from interval $(-h,h), \,\, h>0,$ behaves as $O(h^2)$ when $h \downarrow 0.$ Similar behavior is seen to hold also for the 3-dimensional Bessel bridge. For Brownian bridge and 3-dimensional Bessel bridge this mean of the first exit time has a puzzling representation in terms of the Kolmogorov distribution. The result regarding the Brownian bridge is applied to prove in detail an estimate needed by Walsh to determine the convergence of the binomial tree scheme for European options.

Introduction of unsaturated segments in the bridge of metacyclophanes

1995

Abstract The cyclophanes 2a,b, which contain a triple bond in the meta-bridge, were transformed to the allenes 3a,b by the action of bases or acids. A further isomerization yielded the dienes 4a,b with ( E,Z )- or ( Z,Z )-configuration.

NaI/CuI–II heterometallic cages interconnected by unusual linear 2-coordinate OCN-Cu(I)-NCO links: synthesis, structural, magnetostructural correlati…

2009

A new Na(I)/Cu(I-II) heterometallic coordination complex [Cu(2)L(2)Na(NCO)(2)Cu](n) (1) with an unusual architecture has been synthesised. In 1 cyclic Na-O-Cu-O-Cu cages constructed by the tetradentate N(2)O(2) donor Schiff base ligand (H(2)L = N, N'-bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone) propylenediimine) are interconnected to each other by a rare singly end-to-end bridged OCN-Cu(I)-NCO link generating 1D chain. The complex has been characterised by elemental, spectral and structural analysis. The cyclic voltammogram of 1 has been compared with the analogous complexes. Cryomagnetic susceptibility studies indicate the copper(II) centers in the cyclic Na-O-Cu-O-Cu cages are antiferromagnetically coupled…

BROWNIAN DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS WITHOUT GAUSSIAN RANDOM NUMBERS

1991

We point out that in a Brownian dynamics simulation it is justified to use arbitrary distribution functions of random numbers if the moments exhibit the correct limiting behavior prescribed by the Fokker-Planck equation. Our argument is supported by a simple analytical consideration and some numerical examples: We simulate the Wiener process, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the diffusion in a Φ4 potential, using both Gaussian and uniform random numbers. In these examples, the rate of convergence of the mean first exit time is found to be nearly identical for both types of random numbers.
