Cyanide-bridged Fe(III)–Co(II) bis double zigzag chains with a slow relaxation of the magnetisation

Reaction of [FeIII(bipy)(CN)4]¯ with fully solvated MII cations [M = Co (1) and Mn (2)] produces the isostructural bis double zigzag chains [[FeIII(bipy)(CN)4]2MII(H2O)]·MeCN·1/2H2O; 1 exhibits intrachain ferromagnetic and interchain antiferromagnetic couplings, slow magnetic relaxation and hysteresis effects. A Modular Formal Total Synthesis of (±)-Cycloclavine

Cycloclavine is a clavine-type Ergot alkaloid noteworthy for its unique pentacyclic skeleton featuring a 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane substructure. A short convergent route to the racemic alkaloid is described which comprises only eight linear steps and requires only four chromatographic purifications. The two key building blocks can be prepared in high yield from commercially available starting materials. Two consecutive coupling reactions, namely a selective alkylation of a dienolate and a Heck reaction, are the key steps of the reaction sequence.

Vulnerability of a Damaged Bridge Abutment in a Seismic Area

The case of the abutment of a motorway urban viaduct damaged by human intervention is presented. Built in the 1960s, it lies in a critical seismic area and the human-induced damage involved the elements of the abutment foundation. The structure is geometrically complex and the evaluations of its structural safety were carried out by applying Italian codes from different times: those concerning the time of construction, those of a recent past (1996), and those of the present (2008), inspired by Eurocodes. BioTIME: A database of biodiversity time series for the Anthropocene

Abstract Motivation The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. A survey of dentists' practice in the restoration of the shortened dental arch.

Objectives: The aim of this survey was to determine how a sample of dentists working in general dental practice in the UK sought to restore the mouths of patients who had shortened dental arches (SDAs). Study design: A survey was conducted over a period of six months on four commercial dental laboratories. Cases of SDAs comprising the anterior teeth and 2 to 4 premolars were examined; dental prescriptions were scrutinized and a special data collection form was completed accordingly. Results: A total of 140 SDA cases were examined. Most of these cases were for mandibular SDAs (88.6%). International audience; A new tridentate N2O donor Schiff base ligand [(C6H5C(OH)CHC(CH3)NCH2C5H4N)LH] was obtained by 1:1 condensation of benzoylacetone with 2-picolylamine and has been used to synthesise a mononuclear [CuLCl] (1) and an end-to-end dicyanamide bridged polynuclear {[Cu2(μ-L)2(μ2-1,5-(CN)2N)]ClO4}n (2) copper(II) complexes. Capillary zone electrophoresis for the determination of thiabendazole, prochloraz and procymidone in grapes

Capillary zone electrophoresis with UV detection was applied to the simultaneous determination of thiabendazole, prochloraz and procymidone in grapes. Electrolyte conditions such as pH, composition and concentration of the buffer, addition of organic solvent and working voltage were checked to obtain a high-performance separation of the three fungicides (by measurement of separation efficiency and resolution). The most critical parameter was the pH of the running buffer. The best separation was achieved in 4 mM phosphate solution at pH 3.5. Analysis of thiabendazole and procymidone in fruits and vegetables by capillary electrophoresis–electrospray mass spectrometry

Abstract A capillary electrophoresis–mass spectrometry method for determining procymidone and thiabendazole in apples, grapes, oranges, pears, strawberries and tomatoes is described. Separation is achieved using a buffer of formic acid–ammonium formate at pH 3.5 with 2% of methanol. Fungicide residues present in the sample are preconcentrated by both solid-phase extraction and injection of large sample volumes into the capillary by a stacking technique, to obtain lower detection limits. Dimensions of executive functioning: Evidence from children

This study investigated dimensions of executive functioning in 8- to 13-year-old children. Three tasks from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), two tasks from the NEPSY battery and some additional executive function (EF) tests were administered to 108 children. In line with earlier work, modest correlations among EF measures were obtained (r < .4). Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses yielded three interrelated factors, which resembled those obtained by Miyake et al. Combined proton NMR wideline and NMR relaxometry to study SOM-water interactions of cation-treated soils

Abstract Focusing on the idea that multivalent cations affect SOM matrix and surface, we treated peat and soil samples by solutions of NaCl, CaCl2 or AlCl3. Water binding was characterized with low field 1H-NMR-relaxometry (20 MHz) and 1H wideline NMR spectroscopy (400 MHz) and compared to contact angles. From 1H wideline, we distinguished mobile water and water involved in water molecule bridges (WaMB). Large part of cation bridges (CaB) between SOM functional groups are associated with WaMB.
