Mucoid impaction and plastic bronchitis are relatively rare disorders affecting patients of any age. Here we report the case of mucoid impaction developing in a four-year-old child as a complication of pneumonic infection treated four weeks prior. p.a. chest X-ray and fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed atelectasis and the location of a mucus cast in the left upper lobe. After extraction of the cast via the suction channel of the bronchoscope had failed, we administered 2.5 mg of undiluted recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase) instilled directly over the affected area of occlusion for 15 minutes. This mucolytic agent mobilized the cast by reducing viscoelasticity and adherence of mucus. …

Introduction: The impact of a history of competitive sports on later smoking behavior and occurrence of chronic pulmonary diseases is poorly known. We investigated how a history of elite level sports predicted later pulmonary disease morbidity and mortality. Methods: Chronic pulmonary disease incidence were assessed from national hospital and cause-of-death registers from 1970 to 2015 among Finnish male former elite athletes (n=2078) and matched controls (n=1453) alive in 1970 (mean age 45.0 years). Primary ciliary dyskinesia assessment by means of optical flow analysis of phase-contrast microscopy images

Primary ciliary dyskinesia implies cilia with defective or total absence of motility, which may result in sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and male infertility. Diagnosis can be difficult and is based on an abnormal ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and beat pattern. In this paper, we present a method to determine CBF of isolated cells through the analysis of phase-contrast microscopy images, estimating cilia motion by means of an optical flow algorithm. After having analyzed 28 image sequences (14 with a normal beat pattern and 14 with a dyskinetic pattern), the normal group presented a CBF of 5.2 +/- 1.6 Hz, while the dyskinetic patients presented a 1.9 +/- 0.9 Hz CBF. According to official statistics, infectious diseases only play a minor role in German children. To test this assumption, 1685/3405 charts of a private pediatrician were randomly chosen for further evaluation. 1112/1685 children had been seen in the office during the study period, 934 of them because of an infectious disease (83%). 700/934 charts were further reviewed in a standardized fashion. Pharyngo-tonsillitis was the most frequent diagnosis (18.6%), followed by (non-obstructive) bronchitis (18.5%), infectious diseases of the skin (10.2%) and Otitis media (9.9%).
