CT and MR Imaging of Lesions of Skull Base and Cranial Vault

The importance of CT in examinations of the skull base, including its role in the planning of operative or radiation therapy, has long been recognized (Liliequist and Forsell 1976; Bradac et al. 1977 a, b; 1978 a, b; Hammerschlag et al. 1977; Caille et al. 1977; Lohkamp et al. 1977; Huk and Schiefer 1978; Becker et al. 1978; Weinstein et al. 1978). In the present chapter we shall review the capabilities and limitations of this modality in the diagnosis of diseases involving the bony skull base and cranial vault. A more detailed discussion of specific tumor types may be found under the appropriate headings elsewhere in the book.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present the implementation of 3D fractional viscoelastic constitutive theory presented in Alotta et al., 2016 [1]. Fractional viscoelastic models exactly reproduce the time dependent behaviour of real viscoelastic materials which exhibit a long “fading memory”. From an implementation point of view, this feature implies storing the stress/strain history throughout the simulations which may require a large amount of memory. We propose here a number of strategies to effectively limit the memory required. The form of the constitutive equations are summarized and the finite element implementation in a Newton-Raphson integration scheme is described in detail. …

The clinical evolution of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) remains unclear. Although various clinical, morphological and molecular criteria may indicate increased risk of malignancy, some SFT can still progress despite having a clearly benign appearance. Various risk stratification systems have been proposed, but unfortunately they are not sufficient to precisely determine the malignant potential. A softened strut-and-tie macro model able to reproduce the flexural behavior of external beam-tocolumn joints with the presence of horizontal and vertical steel bars, including softening of compressed struts and yielding of main and secondary steel bars, is presented, to be used for the pushover analysis. Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mesocolon transversum.

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a rare and biologically aggressive tumor. Differential diagnosis must include cystic neoplasms of the pancreas (mucinous and serous cystoadenoma or cystocarcinoma), cystic lymphangioma or mesothelioma and retroperitoneal haematoma. Making the right diagnosis preoperatively may be often difficult, but MFH may be suspected when a huge retroperitoneal mass is found at imaging in elderly patients. We report a case of a primary abdominal MFH originating from the mesocolon transversum.
Solitary fibrous tumor of the floor of the mouth

Background A solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the oral cavity is an extremely rare entity. Its diagnosis is complicated because of its diverse morphology and similarity to other mesenchymal diseases. Case Report A rare case of SFT involving floor of the mouth is presented. The tumor was well circumscribed and almost spherical, measuring approximately 3 cm in diameter. Patient was submitted to biopsy and histopathologic examination showed a tumor composed of spindle to epithelioid cells showing pale to eosinophilic cytoplasm, oval or elongated nuclei with inconspicuous nucleoli. Solitary fibrous tumor of the parotid gland: case report

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that usually develops in the pleura and peritoneum. The head and neck region is involved in only 6% of the cases. Involvement of the parotid gland is a rare phenomenon, with only 24 cases reported in the literature. The aim of this study is to report an additional case of SFT affecting the parotid gland, and to review the literature on previously reported cases. The patient was a 42-year-old male with a 4-cm, fibro-elastic, movable, painless nodule in the inferior lobe of the parotid gland. The main goal of this chapter is the central limit theorem (CLT) for sums of independent random variables (Theorem 15.37) and for independent arrays of random variables (Lindeberg–Feller theorem, Theorem 15.43). For the latter, we prove only that one of the two implications (Lindeberg’s theorem) that is of interest in the applications.
Some new extensions of Edelstein-Suzuki-type fixed point theorem to G-metric and G-cone metric spaces

Abstract In this paper, we prove some fixed point theorems for generalized contractions in the setting of G -metric spaces. Our results extend a result of Edelstein [M. Edelstein, On fixed and periodic points under contractive mappings, J. London Math. Soc., 37 (1962), 74–79] and a result of Suzuki [T. Suzuki, A new type of fixed point theorem in metric spaces, Nonlinear Anal., 71 (2009), 5313–5317]. We prove, also, a fixed point theorem in the setting of G -cone metric spaces.
