Coibenti per "cappotto" esterno. Valutazione con metodologia LCA

2010

Age, pathogen exposure, but not maternal care shape offspring immunity in an insect with facultative family life.

2016

Background To optimize their resistance against pathogen infection, individuals are expected to find the right balance between investing into the immune system and other life history traits. In vertebrates, several factors were shown to critically affect the direction of this balance, such as the developmental stage of an individual, its current risk of infection and/or its access to external help such as parental care. However, the independent and/or interactive effects of these factors on immunity remain poorly studied in insects. Results Here, we manipulated maternal presence and pathogen exposure in families of the European earwig Forficula auricularia to measure whether and how the sur…

20 ans après: a second mutation in MAOA identified by targeted high-throughput sequencing in a family with altered behavior and cognition

2013

Intellectual disability (ID) is characterized by an extraordinary genetic heterogeneity, with >250 genes that have been implicated in monogenic forms of ID. Because this complexity precluded systematic testing for mutations and because clinical features are often non-specific, for some of these genes only few cases or families have been unambiguously documented. It is the case of the X-linked gene encoding monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), for which only one nonsense mutation has been identified in Brunner syndrome, characterized in a single family by mild non-dysmorphic ID and impulsive, violent and aggressive behaviors. We have performed targeted high-throughput sequencing of 220 genes, includi…

Late postoperative opacification of MemoryLens hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses Case series and review

2003

Abstract Purpose: To report clinical and spectrographic analyses of 2 explanted hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs). Setting: John A. Moran Eye Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, and Johannes Gutenberg-University, Department of Ophthalmology, Mainz, Germany. Methods: We report 6 cases of opacification of MemoryLens ® IOLs (Ciba Vision) that occurred approximately 2 years after implantation. The anterior and posterior surfaces of the IOLs had a white, frosted appearance, and the IOLs' interior looked brown, similar to the appearance of a brunescent cataract. Two of the IOLs were explanted because of a significant decrease in visual acuity. The IOLs were sent for further clinicopath…

Ospedale psichiatrico di Sassari

2015

Ancient or recent? Insights into the temporal evolution of the Bruniaceae

2008

AbstractThe Bruniaceae are a South African plant family endemic to the Cape Floristic Region with one geographic outlier (Raspalia trigyna) in the Natal Province. Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have cast new light upon inter- and intra-generic relationships within the family. The present work uses those data to gain insights into the temporal evolution of Bruniaceae by inferring a molecular clock. For calibration, the inferred age of Berzelia cordifolia (3–5My) was used, based on its distribution restricted to the geologically young limestone area around Bredasdorp. The results are consistent with the purported Cretaceous age of the family (‘palaeoendemics’), but also suggest that m…

The Independent Biological Activity of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry23Aa Protein Against Cylas puncticollis

2020

The Cry23Aa/Cry37Aa proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been described toxic to Cylas puncticollis larvae. In general, it is believed that Cry23Aa and Cry37Aa act jointly to exert the insecticidal activity, while there is no evidence of their toxicity individually. Therefore, in the present study, the contribution of each protein in the insecticidal activity toward C. puncticollis larvae has been assessed. The results showed that both proteins were toxic for C. puncticollis larvae when tested individually. Contrary to what was claimed previously, our results suggest that the presence of both proteins is not necessary to exert toxicity against C. puncticollis larvae. Also, the bin…
