Factors associated with edentulousness in an elderly population in Valencia (Spain)

Objective: To determine the prevalence of edentulism and its association with various socioeconomic factors and oral health habits in the population aged 65-74 years old in the region of Valencia. Methods: A cross sectional study was designed. Thirty-four primary health centers and five nursing homes were chosen at random in the region of Valencia (10-15 voluntary participants per sampling point). Clinical examinations were carried out by three calibrated dentists (kappa>0.85) in the same centers. The total sample consisted of 531 individuals (235 men and 296 women). Evaluation of cell proliferation rate in non-dysplastic leukoplakias

Objective: Analyze whether the most frequent cases of non-dysplastic leukoplakias, hyperkeratosis (H), acanthosis (A), and hyperkeratosis with acanthosis (HA) have similar cell proliferation rates and to compare them with epithelial dysplastic (ED) leukoplakias and normal oral epithelium (NOE).Study design: The sample comprised 10 cases of normal oral epithelium, 10 cases of hyperkeratosis, 10 cases of acanthosis, 10 cases of hyperkeratosis with acanthosis and 10 cases of epithelial dysplasia. The effects of some anesthetics and detergents on the Fe2+/ascorbate-stimulated non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation potential and on the NADPH-dependent enzymatic lipid peroxidation capacity were characterized in mouse heart homogenates. 2. 2. Chlorpromazine turned out to be the most efficient inhibitor, causing a 50% inhibition at a concentration of 0.03 mM in the non-enzymatic assay, and at a concentration of 0.02 mM in the enzymatic assay. 3. 3.
