Is our brain hardwired to produce God, or is our brain hardwired to perceive God? A systematic review on the role of the brain in mediating religious…
2009
To figure out whether the main empirical question "Is our brain hardwired to believe in and produce God, or is our brain hardwired to perceive and experience God?" is answered, this paper presents systematic critical review of the positions, arguments and controversies of each side of the neuroscientific–theological debate and puts forward an integral view where the human is seen as a psycho-somatic entity consisting of the multiple levels and dimensions of human existence (physical, biological, psychological, and spiritual reality), allowing consciousness/ mind/spirit and brain/body/matter to be seen as different sides of the same phenomenon, neither reducible to each other. The emergence …
Frequencies of the Buddhist Meditative Chant – Om Mani Padme Hum
2016
Om Mani Padme Hum is a six syllable mantra in Tibetian Buddhism associated with the bodhisattva – Avalokitesvara. This mantra as known by the Buddhist generates positive energies within the body through mystical vibrations and frequencies when chanted repeatedly. The mantra has shown enhanced cognitive effects in organisms without auditory apparatus where the interaction is assumed to be taking place at a cellular and biochemical level (Pereira 2015a, b; Pereira 2016a,b). Based on the results of these studies, this paper evaluates the frequencies associated with each syllable of the mantra comparing it to therapeutic/healing effects that have been known or studied for some frequencies by ho…
Mercury concentration, speciation and budget in volcanic aquifers: Italy and Guadeloupe (Lesser Antilles)
2009
Abstract Quantifying the contribution of volcanism to global mercury (Hg) emissions is important to understand the pathways and the mechanisms of Hg cycling through the Earth's geochemical reservoirs and to assess its environmental impacts. While previous studies have suggested that degassing volcanoes might contribute importantly to the atmospheric budget of mercury, little is known about the amount and behaviour of Hg in volcanic aquifers. Here we report on detailed investigations of both the content and the speciation of mercury in aquifers of active volcanoes in Italy and Guadeloupe Island (Lesser Antilles). In the studied groundwaters, total Hg (THg) concentrations range from 10 to 500…
Tyniecka ikebana
2016
Tyniec ikebana or tynike is a creative reinterpretation of the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement used for the liturgical purposes and for the proclamation of the Christian message. In my article I will present the basie features, history and principles of ikebana and the relationship between Buddhism and Japanese culture and ikebana. Next I am going to describe the cultural role of flowers in Europę, and the reception of ikebana in the Western culture. But the main purpose of the article is to show the specificity of the ikebana practice in Benedictine monastery in Tyniec (Poland) as a new, interesting way of evangelization. The main problem is the tension between the Buddhist …
Beyond budgeting since inception: what is the status?
2017
Master's thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2017 The Beyond Budgeting idea as developed by Hope and Fraser (1997) has been in existence for almost twenty years, yet, the research community still has divergent views on whether the concept is a better management accounting tool for organizations’ management control system or not. Also, whether it has received attention in research community like other management accounting tools such as Traditional Budgeting and Balanced Scorecard. On this notion, this study is developed to investigate the status of the research discourse on the concept to gain relevant knowledge. Inspired by Scapens and Bromwich (2001) and built on Ac…
Bile acid receptor TGR5 is critically involved in preference for dietary lipids and obesity
2020
International audience; We investigated the implication of Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) in fat preference and fat sensing in taste bud cells (TBC) in C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) and TGR5 knock out (TGR5-/-) male mice maintained for 20 weeks on a high-fat diet (HFD). We also assessed the implication of TGR5 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in young obese humans. The high-fat diet (HFD)-fed TGR5-/- mice were more obese, marked with higher liver weight, lipidemia and steatosis than WT obese mice. The TGR5-/- obese mice exhibited high daily food/energy intake, fat mass and inflammatory status. WT obese mice lost the preference for dietary fat, but the TGR5-/- obese mice exhibited n…
Foliar influences on the vegetative development of grapevine
1997
<p style="text-align: justify;">Various defoliation treatments were applied to grapevine shoots during the whole duration of the growth period: full defoliation of every shoot of vine, defoliations retaining a various number of adult leaves to the base of every shoot and defoliations retaining a various number of young leaves to the top. The effects of these treatments allow to identify the major foliar influences on the vegetative development. Total defoliation induced a lesser intemodal elongation. This result is probably due, in part, to a carbohydrates deficiency consecutive to this drastic treatment. The defoliations with variation of the number of young leaves showed that the le…
