Housing Affordability in Metropolitan Areas. The Application of a Combination of the Ratio Income and Residual Income Approaches to Two Case Studies …
2017
Housing affordability problems have become more serious over the course of the last few decades and are now also affecting the middle-class, despite the fall in prices on the housing market. This study proposes a methodology to assess threshold-income as an index for measuring housing affordability by applying a combination of the ratio income and residual income approaches. The methodology is applied to two particular areas of Sicily in Italy as case studies consisting of medium-size metropolitan areas located in a less developed European region. The areas have been chosen on the basis of their different territorial structure: a polarized area that comprises a high-density city centre and …
A new project management approach for R&D software projects in the automotive industry - continuous V-model
2017
Most current work activities in R&D centres are innovative and dynamic, with project management acting as the discipline that governs them. The improvement of PM methods has become a necessity due to the following main factors: classical methodologies are increasingly difficult to apply, cutbacks in project duration are requested by organisations and customers, demands for product quality are continuously expanding. The paper examines how PM concepts are used in developed R&D projects, based on the V-model approach. It also introduces an enhanced new approach called Continuous V-model - CVM, based on agile concepts. The model has been applied on a real automotive R&D project and the resulte…
Structural Vibration Control for a Class of Connected Multistructure Mechanical Systems
2012
Published version of an article from the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher:http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/942910 A mathematical model to compute the overall vibrational response of connected multistructure mechanical systems is presented. Using the proposed model, structural vibration control strategies for seismic protection of multibuilding systems can be efficiently designed. Particular attention is paid to the design of control configurations that combine passive interbuilding dampers with local feedback control systems implemented in the buildings. These hybrid active-passive control strategies possess the good properties of passive contro…
Discrete-time multioverlapping controller design for structural vibration control of tall buildings under seismic excitation
2012
Published version of an article from the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher:http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/636878 In this paper, a computationally effective strategy to obtain multioverlapping controllers via the Inclusion Principle is applied to design discrete-time state-feedback multioverlapping LQR con- trollers for seismic protection of tall buildings. To compute the corresponding control actions, the proposed semidecentralized controllers only require state information from neighboring stories. This particular configuration of information exchange allows introducing a dramatic reduction in the transmission range required for a wireless imp…
Active-passive control strategy for adjacent buildings
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: 2011 Proceedings of the American Control Conference. Also available from the publisher at: http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?arnumber=05991059 In this paper, a control strategy to mitigate the vibrational response of adjacent buildings under seismic excitation is presented. The proposed strategy combines inter-building passive actuators with active actuators placed in the building stories. The main ideas are presented by means of a simplified two-building model; however, a semi-decentralized overlapping approach via the inclusion principle has been used to impose a proper information exchange structure suitable for wireless control of larg…
Semi-decentralized strategies in structural vibration control
2011
Published version of an article published in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2011.2.2 In this work, the main ideas involved in the design of overlapping and multi-overlapping controllers via the Inclusion Principle are discussed and illustrated in the context of the Structural Vibration Control of tall buildings under seismic excitation. A detailed theoretical background on the Inclusion Principle and the design of overlapping controllers is provided. Overlapping and multi-overlapping LQR controllers are designed for a simplied five-story building model. Numerical simulations are conducted to asses the pe…
Drivers and barriers of circular economy business models: Where we are now, and where we are heading
2022
Literature on the circular economy business model (CEBM) has witnessed a sharp upsurge in recent years. Although scholars have investigated CEBM from several perspectives, including the green business model, waste management, digital technology, the supply chain, and the financial impact of CEBM, critical analysis of the extant literature has not attracted scholarly attention. The current systematic literature review (SLR) on CEBM is an attempt to critically analyse and appraise the prior findings by following robust research protocols. We analysed a pool of 126 studies to identify the thematic research areas, recognise the research gaps and present future research agendas. Subsequently, we…
Boligstrukturen i norske byer og tettsteder i 1970
2009
2015
Masteroppgave bygg- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 This is a master's thesis written in the topic of civil engineering science at the University of Agder in the Institute of Engineering science located in Grimstad. The thesis is a study of results from three different seismic analysis of a thirteen story building, a six story building and of a constellation of these two buildings on a combined basement. The collected results is gathered from analysis according to the requirements given in the Eurocode 8. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the differences in baseshear forces from the lateral force method, an equivalent model and from a detailed modal analysis of the buildings. The main …
