The burn-out is a pathological condition related to work set, characterized by three dimensions: emotional worn out, absence of personality and work implementation. The authors show the results of a study performed on 100 nurses and deputy professionals of two Sicilian hospitals, where a Maslach Burn-Out Inventory (MBI) test was supplied by two nurses coordinators.

Predictors of the Occupational Burnout of Healthcare Workers in Poland during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study.

2022

The study aims at analysing the occupational burnout phenomenon, the level of anxiety and depression, as well as the quality of life (QOL) of healthcare workers (HCW) during the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 497 healthcare workers examined across Poland. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) and World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Short Form (WHOQOL BREF) were used. A total of 71.63% (356) of the respondents presented high and moderate levels of emotional exhaustion during the pandemic, 71.43% (355) reported low and moderate job satisfaction levels, whereas 40.85% (203) displayed high and moderate levels of depersonalization. A group …

The Impact of Candle Burning During All Saints’ Day Ceremonies on Ambient Alkyl-Substituted Benzene Concentrations

2013

Research findings concerning benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene, meta-, para- and ortho-xylene as well as styrene (BTEXS) emission at public cemeteries during All Saints’ Day are presented here. Tests were carried out at town-located cemeteries in Opole and Grodków (southern Poland) and, as a benchmark, at the centres of those same towns. The purpose of the study was to estimate BTEXS emissions caused by the candle burning and, equally important to examine, whether emissions generated by the tested sources were similar to the BTEXS emissions generated by road transport. During the festive period, significant increases in benzene concentrations, by 200 % and 144 %, were noted at the cemeteries …

Facing EL teachers' burnout through motivation

2019

The educational institutions in many countries are faced with the  major problem of teacher burnout causing  high rates of  attrition and absenteeism. There is widespread agreement among researchers that  teacher burnout can effectively be countered through emphasis on  teacher motivation.  This article is about a 2-year qualitative research carried out by an English language teacher who focused on how to cope successfully with potential burnout conditions through a mutually reinforcing cycle of teacher and student motivation activated by the implementation of a Postmethod  emotion-focused pedagogical framework and the emphasis on the quality of life in the English classroom.

Study Crafting and Self-Undermining in Higher Education Students: A Weekly Diary Study on the Antecedents.

2021

The aim of the current study is to validate the adaptation of the job demands–resources theory to the study context. In addition, we introduce the concepts study crafting and self-undermining to the study demands–resources framework by examining the mediating role of engagement and exhaustion in the relationship between study characteristics and study crafting and self-undermining. Over four consecutive weeks, 205 higher education students answered a questionnaire about their weekly study demands and resources, their well-being (i.e., engagement, exhaustion), and their study crafting and self-undermining behaviors. Multilevel structural equation modeling (controlling for autoregressors of m…

In search of a theoretical framework of factors influencing work and life balance

2021

Work and life balance (WLB) has gained noticeable attention amid the pandemic. Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, the increasing pace of life encouraged the investigation of individual and organisational aspects of WLB. Physically and mentally healthy people help society develop and grow. Health issues caused by work and life imbalance lead to dissatisfaction with both work and life, which, in turn, leads to higher stress and stress-related illnesses, for instance, burnout. From the organisational point of view, WLB is a factor in analysing the efficiency of an enterprise. The consequences of a work-life imbalance are intentional or unintentional absence, high employee turnover, low prod…

Probing the low-temperature chemistry of ethanol via the addition of dimethyl ether

2018

Considering the importance of ethanol (EtOH) as an engine fuel and a key component of surrogate fuels, the further understanding of its auto-ignition and oxidation characteristics at engine-relevant conditions (high pressures and low temperatures) is still necessary. However, it remains difficult to measure ignition delay times for ethanol at temperatures below 850 K with currently available facilities including shock tube and rapid compression machine due to its low reactivity. Considering the success of our recent study of toluene oxidation under similar conditions [38], dimethyl ether (DME) has been selected as a radical initiator to explore the low-temperature reactivity of ethanol. In …
