Value dimensions in consumers’ experience: Combining the intra- and inter-variable approaches in the hospitality sector

2015

Within the deep and extensive research on value, two main areas of discussion emerge: multidimensionality (intra-variable approach) and interrelationships with other constructs (inter-variable approach). Independently, the two areas have produced relevant knowledge; however, when studying them jointly, the results are inconsistent. The paper aims first to build four self-oriented value scales for a hospitality experience (efficiency, quality, play, and aesthetics), and second to test them in a SEM model with overall perceived value, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty, upon a sample of 585 hotel consumers in Sardinia (Italy). The results show both unexpected (for the intra-variable …

Logistics Service Quality and Technology Investment in Retailing

2009

The quality of physical distribution could be a source of differentiation and, consequently, provide a competitive advantage for the retailer. There is no consensus in the literature, however, on the components of logistics service quality, nor on the role of the retailer's investment in technology. In this context, the present paper aims at evaluating the major components of logistics service quality and technological investment, as well as analysing their impact on the results achieved by the store in terms of satisfaction and customer loyalty in different retailing sectors. As a result, we conclude that there is a need for the retailer to plan investment in technology applied to logistic…

The role of organizational facilitators in promoting job-related mental health and group service effectiveness: a two-wave analysis

2016

This study aimed to add to knowledge by providing a more systematic integration of work characteristics, workers’ health and performance. The two-wave multi-source study was conducted to test the relationship over time between the healthy states of groups of service-oriented workers and their service effectiveness when their organizations provide facilitators such as training, technical support and autonomy. The study takes healthy states to be a composite of affective-motivational and competent collective states (collective vigour and service competence) and service effectiveness. Service effectiveness was a combination of service quality as assessed by customers and their loyalty intentio…

Exploring End-User Reactions to Variations in the Value Proposition of Value Services

2009

Value services are most often innovations where endusers have little or no experience from using the service. Designing business models for such services is a challenging task including the design of value propositions that are perceived and interpreted through end-users’ complex value assessments. This study presents the results from a study of end-user value assessments of value proposition variations for two value services – mobile VoIP and multi play services. The study suggests a method for investigating end-user reactions to value proposition variations and presents the effects of these variations on attribute perceptions and value drivers. The main contribution of the study is method…

Current Software-as-a-Service Business Models: Evidence from Finland

2012

This paper characterizes the business models of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) firms based on their value proposition, customer segments, revenue streams, and customer relationship, and analyzes interconnections of these business model elements. The target set of 163 Finnish SaaS and ASP firms was first compared to other software firms and then clustered into four clusters based on indicator data of their business model elements. The comparison reveals that the SaaS and ASP firms have smaller customer and transaction sizes than software firms in general. The resulting classification reveals two different configurations, a pure-play SaaS model and an enterprise SaaS model, and the typical fact…

A blockchain platform for Demand Response in Mediterranean islands: a smart contract for remuneration

2022

The Blorin project started at the end of 2019 to support the implementation of a blockchain platform to support the energy services provision from end users by means of Demand Response and Vehicle to Grid programs. The experimental part of the project is being carried out on two Mediterranean islands and inside the University campus in Palermo. Customized smart contracts have been designed to support the active participation of end users to regulation services for the two weak electrical grids of the islands in the view of a deep penetration of renewable energy in the two energy systems. In particular, the smart contract for remuneration accounts for the very special energy situation of isl…

Towards a business model for second-life batteries: Barriers, opportunities, uncertainties, and technologies

2023

Electric vehicles (EVs) and the recent pandemic outbreak give cities a new trend to primarily private and shared mobility with low noise and less air pollution. Crucial factors for the widespread of EVs are the electrical charging infrastructure, driving range, and the reduction of the cost of battery packets. For this reason, there is a massive effort from manufacturers, governments, and the scientific community to reduce battery costs and boost sustainable electrical production and distribution. Battery reuse is an alternative to reduce batteries’ costs and environmental impacts. Second-life batteries can be used in a wide variety of secondary applications. Second-life batteries can be co…

A Remuneration Model of Energy Community Members in Italy

2022

The Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II) requires Member States to authorize the constitution of consumers as self-consumers of renewable electricity by ensuring them non-discriminatory and disproportionate treatment. Member States must establish a favorable framework for promoting and facilitating the development of self-consumption, including in collective form (art. 21). According to the Directive, the granting of rights to renewable energy self-consumers who act collectively allows to increase the energy efficiency of households and helps to combat energy poverty by reducing consumption and supply tariffs. In Italy, the decree n. 162/2019 and then amended with Decree 199/2021 has partially…

Turning a business idea into a real business through an entrepreneurial learning approach based on dynamic start-up business model simulators

2017

In this paper we argue that the use of System Dynamics modelling applied to Business Model design and representation may result in an entrepreneurial learning approach to support potential entrepreneurs in exploring and learn how a business operates and reacts according to alternative strategic choices. As such, a Dynamic Business Modelling approach provides useful insights to start-up entrepreneurs learning processes by capturing and explaining how critical Business Model elements interact to produce enduring competitive advantages over time.

Conceptualizing Innovative Business Planning Frameworks to Improving New Venture Strategy Communication and Performance. A Preliminary Analysis of th…

2017

Business planning is a fundamental activity that start-up entrepreneurs are called to carry out in order to attract new investors, business angels, and venture capitalists, to subsidize a new business idea. The key-tool universally used to communicate a new venture strategy to these players, as well as to other stakeholders, is the business plan, i.e. a framework including the business idea description, the product(s), the market sector(s), the core-assets, the budget, the business sustainability and profitability, and so on. As such, a major success factor for drawing up a business plan is the capability to clearly and synthetically communicate the business strategy. Among the others, one …
