Assisted self-sustaining combustion reaction in the Fe–Si system: Mechanical and chemical activation

Abstract This work presents original investigations carried out to improve the activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process in the Fe–Si system: different ignition modes are tested (volume heating as opposed to a local ignition source), and the use of additive is considered in order to enhance the SHS type reactivity in the Fe–Si system. When 20 wt.% of KNO 3 is added to the reactive mixture, the fast (>20 mm s −1 ), stable and self-sustaining combustion reaction produces a very fine FeSi + α-FeSi 2 structure. Microstructural study of titanium carbonitride elaborated by combustion synthesis

Abstract The self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (S.H.S.) process, which is promising for the fabrication of ceramic materials, was chosen to elaborate titanium carbonitride materials. The influence of parameters such as nitrogen gas pressure and carbon ratio on the microstructure was studied. A single phase product of Ti(C,N) is obtained for a carbon ratio under 15 at.% and a nitrogen pressure of 36 MPa. The increase of the carbon ratio corresponds to a decrease of the maximum temperature reached during the synthesis. Sensorless Control of Induction-Motor Drive Based on Robust Kalman Filter and Adaptive Speed Estimation

This paper deals with robust estimation of rotor flux and speed for sensorless control of motion control systems with an induction motor. Instead of using sixth-order extended Kalman filters (EKFs), rotor flux is estimated by means of a fourth-order descriptor-type robust KF, which explicitly takes into account motor parameter uncertainties, whereas the speed is estimated using a recursive least squares algorithm starting from the knowledge of the rotor flux itself. It is shown that the descriptor-type structure allows for a direct translation of parameter uncertainties into variations of the coefficients appearing in the model, and this improves the degree of robustness of the estimates. Self-calibration of a PTZ Camera Using New LMI Constraints

In this paper, we propose a very reliable and flexible method for self-calibrating rotating and zooming cameras - generally referred to as PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras. The proposed method employs a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) resolution approach and allows extra tunable constraints on the intrinsic parameters to be taken into account during the process of estimating these parameters. Furthermore, the considered constraints are simultaneously enforced in all views rather than in a single reference view. The results of our experiments show that the proposed approach allows for significant improvement in terms of accuracy and robustness when compared against state of the art methods.

Ascidians are marine invertebrate chordates belonging to the earliest branch (Tunicata) in the chordate phylum, therefore, they are of interest for studying the evolution of immune systems. Rotational CARS thermometry at high temperature (1800 K) and high pressure (0.1-1.55 MPa)

International audience; Dual-broadband rotational CARS (DB-RCARS) thermometry has been investigated at high temperature and high pressure. Single-shot measurements were performed at 1800 K, in air and nitrogen at pressures up to 1.55 MPa and in oxygen at pressures up to 0.5 MPa. For all conditions, the resonant signal contribution to the spectra clearly dominated over the non-resonant one, implying the high potential for DB-RCARS for temperature and concentration measurements also at the high temperatures and pressures used in the present investigation. Characterization and pilot scale fluidized bed gasification of herbaceous biomass: A case study on alfalfa pellets

Abstract Pilot-scale bubbling fluidized bed gasification tests of alfalfa pellets were performed at two different operational periods ranged on the basis of the two given equivalence ratio (ER) (the ratio between actual air and the stoichiometric air) namely as 0.25 and 0.30. During the test, the solid feeding rate was kept constant at 4.7 kg/h while the air input was varied and thus the ER. Increasing air from 4.16 to 4.99 N m3/h contributed to the evolution pattern of several parameters such as the rise in gas lower heating value (LHV) and gas yield, the average maximum of which were 4.2 MJ/N m3 and 1.5 N m3/kg respectively. Therefore, in this work, a solution for valorisation of SS as solid fuel is proposed based on an advanced compositional investigation of SS versus conventional solid fuels, namely, lignite (L) and beech sawdust (BS).
