Combustion behavior of kraft black liquor droplets from hot water pretreated hardwood and softwood chips
2016
This paper describes the combustion behavior of birch and spruce kraft black liquors obtained from an integrated forest biorefinery concept in which a hot water extraction of chips was performed before pulping. This pretreatment, aiming mainly at the recovery of various hemicellulose-derived materials, increased the concentrations of lignin and hydroxy acids in black liquors, compared with those in the reference black liquors without any process modification. On the other hand, the pretreatment decreased the concentrations of volatile acids and other organics (extractives and hemicellulose residues). Because of these characteristic changes, the total burning times (pyrolysis time plus char …
WAVES PROPAGATION AND LIQUID ALUMINUM PARTICLE INJECTION IN SOLID ROCKET MOTORS
2013
A method to determine the injection of aluminium particles from the solid propellant burning surface to the core of the chamber in the presence of an acoustic wave field is developed and aluminum-droplet effects on propagation of acoustic waves in the flow of a solid rocket motor are analysed. Changes of the multiphase flow compressibility are calculated by taking into account both the translational and the pulsational motions of the aluminum droplets in consequence of the acoustic waves.
Detailed Combustion Analysis of a Supercharged Double-Fueled Spark Ignition Engine
2021
The main goal of researches in the field of automotive engineering is to obtain a large-scale implementation of low- or zero-emissions vehicles in order to substantially reduce air pollution in urban areas. A fundamental step toward this green transition is represented by the improvement of current internal combustion (IC) engines in terms of fuel economy and pollutant emissions. The spark ignition (SI) engines of modern light-duty vehicles are supercharged, down-sized, and equipped with direct injection. Gaseous fuels, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or natural gas (NG), proved to be a valid alternative to gasoline in order to reduce pollutant emissions and increase fuel economy. In …
Analysing Student Performance using Sparse Data of Core Bachelor Courses
2015
Curricula for Computer Science (CS) degrees are characterized by the strong occupational orientation of the discipline. In the BSc degree structure, with clearly separate CS core studies, the learning skills for these and other required courses may vary a lot, which is shown in students' overall performance. To analyze this situation, we apply nonstandard educational data mining techniques on a preprocessed log file of the passed courses. The joint variation in the course grades is studied through correlation analysis while intrinsic groups of students are created and analyzed using a robust clustering technique. Since not all students attended all courses, there is a nonstructured sparsity…
ICA of full complex-valued fMRI data using phase information of spatial maps.
2015
Background ICA of complex-valued fMRI data is challenging because of the ambiguous and noisy nature of the phase. A typical solution is to remove noisy regions from fMRI data prior to ICA. However, it may be more optimal to carry out ICA of full complex-valued fMRI data, since any filtering or voxel-based processing may disrupt information that can be useful to ICA. New method We enable ICA of the full complex-valued fMRI data by utilizing phase information of estimated spatial maps (SMs). The SM phases are first adjusted to properly represent spatial phase changes of all voxels based on estimated time courses (TCs), and then these are used to segment the voxels into BOLD-related and unwant…
Design of the CGAL Spherical Kernel and application to arrangements of circles on a sphere
2009
International audience; This paper presents a CGAL kernel for algorithms manipulating 3D spheres, circles, and circular arcs. The paper makes three contributions. First, the mathematics underlying two non trivial predicates are presented. Second, the design of the kernel concept is developed, and the connexion between the mathematics and this design is established. In particular, we show how two different frameworks can be combined: one for the general setting, and one dedicated to the case where all the objects handled lie on a reference sphere. Finally, an assessment about the efficacy of the \sk\ is made through the calculation of the exact arrangement of circles on a sphere. On average …
Salient Spin Images: A Descriptor for 3D Object Recognition
2018
In the last decades a wide range of algorithms have been devoted to recognize 3D free-from objects under real conditions such as occlusions, clutters, rotation, scale and translation. Spin image is one of these algorithms known to be robust to rotation, translation, occlusions up to 70% and clutters up to 60%, but still suffer from scaling, resolution changes and it is time consuming. In this paper we present a novel approach based on spin images, called salient spin images (SSI). This method enhances spin images algorithm based on its limits. Particularly, it decreases significantly the complexity of the algorithm using DoG detector, it shows a higher performance due to the relevant locali…
Robust estimation and regression with parametric quantile functions
2022
A new, broad family of quantile-based estimators is described, and theoretical and empirical evidence is provided for their robustness to outliers in the response. The proposed method can be used to estimate all types of parameters, including location, scale, rate and shape parameters, extremes, regression coefficients and hazard ratios, and can be extended to censored and truncated data. The described estimator can be utilized to construct robust versions of common parametric and semiparametric methods, such as linear (Normal) regression, generalized linear models, and proportional hazards models. A variety of significant results and applications is presented to show the flexibility of the…
An overview of robust Bayesian analysis
1994
Robust Bayesian analysis is the study of the sensitivity of Bayesian answers to uncertain inputs. This paper seeks to provide an overview of the subject, one that is accessible to statisticians outside the field. Recent developments in the area are also reviewed, though with very uneven emphasis. © 1994 SEIO.
