MEDLEM database, a data collection on large Elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean and Black seas

The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains more than 3,000 records (with more than 4,000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 21 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The principal species included in the archive are the devil ray (1,868 individuals), the basking shark (935 individuals), the blue shark (622 individuals), and the great white shark (342 individuals). In the last decades, other species such as the thresher shark (187 individuals), the shortfin mako (180 individuals), and the spiny butterfly ray (138) were reported with increasing frequency. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aids in the design of such valves by inexpensively providing insight into flow patterns, potential noise sources, and cavitation. Boom Motion Control Using Pressure Control Valve

This paper focuses on the reduction in oscillations created by counterbalance valves by using a proportional pressure control valve. The motion control of a cylinder boom is presented using this valve, which is a 4/3-way directional control valve with the main spool in series with an upstream compensator. The input to the valve control is a main spool position reference and, indirectly, the compensator downstream pressure. Active dispersal is driven by extrinsic and intrinsic factors at the three stages of departure, transfer and settlement. Most empirical studies capture only one stage of this complex process, and knowledge of how much can be generalized from one stage to another remains unknown. Here we use genetic assignment tests to reconstruct dispersal across 5 years and 232 habitat patches of a Glanville fritillary butterfly ( Melitaea cinxia ) metapopulation. Efficient computation of the branching structure of an algebraic curve

An efficient algorithm for computing the branching structure of a compact Riemann surface defined via an algebraic curve is presented. Generators of the fundamental group of the base of the ramified covering punctured at the discriminant points of the curve are constructed via a minimal spanning tree of the discriminant points. This leads to paths of minimal length between the points, which is important for a later stage where these paths are used as integration contours to compute periods of the surface. Empirical evidence does not fully support the universal nature of the positive interspecific abundance—distribution relationship. We have earlier documented a negative relationship for butterfly species in Finland, but recently our view was again challenged using a small subset of Finnish butterflies as apparent evidence. Here we scrutinize the critique and identify some general conceptual challenges in analyses of interspecific abundance—distribution relationships.
