Electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of the half-metallic ferromagnetic quaternary Heusler compounds CoFeMnZ(Z=Al, Ga, Si, Ge)
2011
The quaternary intermetallic Heusler compounds CoFeMn$Z$ ($Z=\text{Al}$, Ga, Si, or Ge) with $1:1:1:1$ stoichiometry were predicted to exhibit half-metallic ferromagnetism by ab initio electronic structure calculations. The compounds were synthesized using an arc-melting technique and the crystal structures were analyzed using x-ray powder diffraction. The electronic properties were investigated using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The low-temperature magnetic moments, as determined from magnetization measurements, follow the Slater-Pauling rule, confirming the proposed high spin polarizations. All compounds have high Curie temperatures, allowing for applications at room temperature…
CO2 to Liquid Fuels: Photocatalytic Conversion in a Continuous Membrane Reactor
2018
The photocatalytic reduction of CO, into value-added chemicals using sunlight is a promising approach to promote energy-bearing products, mitigating the adverse effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In this work, exfoliated C3N4 was incorporated into Nafion matrix and used in a continuous photocatalytic reactor for converting CO2 into liquid fuels. Comprehensive structural and morphological diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), FT-IR, ATR-IR, and SEM measurements were performed for C3N4-loaded Nafion membrane and then compared with those of a Nafion membrane without any catalyst. The synergic effect of C3N4 organic catalyst embedded in a Nafion dense matrix and a continuous operating mo…
Correlation in Heusler compounds YSi(Y=3d transition metal)
2007
Abstract Ferromagnetic Co 2 -based Heusler compounds have generated increasing interest over the last few years because of their peculiar electronic structure. They exhibit a band gap for the electrons of one direction and are metallic for the other. Further, they cover a very wide range of magnetic moments and Curie temperatures. Despite lot of efforts in theory and experiment to describe bulk materials and thin films, there are some marked discrepancies between observed and predicted properties of these materials. These discrepancies appear not only across but also within synthesis methods as well as in the theoretical predictions. In this contribution, the electronic structure of Co 2 YS…
Orientational dynamics of colloidal ribbons self-assembled from microscopic magnetic ellipsoids
2016
We combine experiments and theory to investigate the orientational dynamics of dipolar ellipsoids, which self-assemble into elongated ribbon-like structures due to the presence of a permanent magnetic moment, perpendicular to the long axis in each particle. Monodisperse hematite ellipsoids are synthesized via the sol-gel technique and arrange into ribbons in the presence of static or time-dependent magnetic fields. We find that under an oscillating field, the ribbons reorient perpendicular to the field direction, in contrast with the behaviour observed under a static field. This observation is explained theoretically by treating a chain of interacting ellipsoids as a single particle with or…
Deformation of flexible ferromagnetic filaments under a rotating magnetic field
2019
Research on magnetic particles dispersed in a fluid medium, actuated by a rotating magnetic field, is becoming increasingly active for both lab-on-chip and bio-sensing applications. In this study, we experimentally investigate the behaviour of ferromagnetic filaments in a rotating field. Filaments are synthesized by linking micron-sized ferromagnetic particles with DNA strands. The experiments were conducted under different magnetic field strengths, frequencies and filament sizes, and deformation of the filaments was registered via microscope and camera. The results obtained showed that the body deformation is larger for longer filaments and higher frequencies and lower for larger magnetic …
Phosphomolybdic acid and mixed phosphotungstic/phosphomolybdic acid chitosan membranes as polymer electrolyte for H2/O2 fuel cells
2017
Abstract Flat, free-standing phosphomolybdic acid and mixed phosphotungstic/phosphomolybdic acid chitosan membranes were prepared by in-situ ionotropic gelation process at room temperature on porous alumina support firstly impregnated by heteropolyacid. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of compact and homogenous polymeric membranes, whose thickness resulted to be dependent on reticulation time, and almost independent on the employed heteropolyacid nature and concentration. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced the formation of crystalline membranes without appreciable concentration of unprotonated NH 2 groups and heteropolyacid ions with p…
Imaging Topological Spin Structures Using Light-Polarization and Magnetic Microscopy
2020
We present an imaging modality that enables detection of magnetic moments and their resulting stray magnetic fields. We use wide-field magnetic imaging that employs a diamond-based magnetometer and has combined magneto-optic detection (e.g. magneto-optic Kerr effect) capabilities. We employ such an instrument to image magnetic (stripe) domains in multilayered ferromagnetic structures.
Element-Selective Magnetic Imaging in Exchange-Coupled Systems by Magnetic Photoemission Microscopy
1998
We have used a photoemission microscope to obtain element-resolved magnetic contrast in stacked magnetic thin film systems. Magnetic information is thereby provided by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Elemental sensitivity, which is crucial for studying magnetic coupling phenomena in systems with several different layers, is achieved by tuning the energy of the illuminating photons to atomic absorption edges. We present measurements of a Ni-coated Co micropattern on Cu(001), and a wedged Co/Cr/Fe(001) sample. In the former sample the Ni magnetization is seen to follow the magnetization of the Co pattern, thereby changing from an out-of-plane easy axis in areas without underlying Co to in…
Charge transfer and tunable minority band gap at the Fermi energy of a quaternaryCo2(MnxTi1−x)GeHeusler alloy
2010
We investigate the distribution of element-specific magnetic moments and changes in the spin-resolved unoccupied density of states in a series of half-metallic ${\text{Co}}_{2}({\text{Mn}}_{x}{\text{Ti}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x})\text{Ge}$ Heusler alloys using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Co and Mn magnetic moments are oriented parallel while a small Ti moment shows antiparallel to the mean magnetization. The element-specific magnetic moments remain almost independent on the composition. Therefore, a replacement of Ti by Mn results in an increase in magnetization. The increase in magnetization with increasing $x$ follows the Slater-Pauling rule. The Fermi level decreases with respect to…
Low Temperature Investigation of the Thermal and Magnetic Properties of 1-d Ferrimagnetic Systems
1987
The series of structurally ordered bimetallic chains formulated as MM′ (EDTA).6H2O, in short (MM′), provides the most versatile known example of 1-dimensional ferrimagnets, since on the same structural support many different magnetic ions (Mn, Co, Ni and Cu(II)) can be selectively accommodated.1 Consequently, many choices of alternating magnetic moments with Heisenberg or Ising exchange couplings can be investigated. Moreover, taking into account that the M-M′ distances along the chain are alternating, this series could show at the same time an alternation of the exchange parameter2.
