Synergy and Antagonism of Active Constituents of ADAPT-232 on Transcriptional Level of Metabolic Regulation of Isolated Neuroglial Cells
2013
Gene expression profiling was performed on the human neuroglial cell line T98G after treatment with adaptogen ADAPT-232 and its constituents - extracts of Eleutherococcus senticosus root, Schisandra chinensis berry, and Rhodiola rosea root as well as several constituents individually, namely, eleutheroside E, schizandrin B, salidroside, triandrin, and tyrosol. A common feature for all tested adaptogens was their effect on G-protein-coupled receptor signaling pathways, i.e., cAMP, phospholipase C (PLC), and phosphatidylinositol signal transduction pathways. Adaptogens may reduce the cAMP level in brain cells by down-regulation of adenylate cyclase gene ADC2Y and up-regulation of phosphodiest…
Carbon dynamics of soil organic matter in bulk soil and aggregate fraction during secondary succession in a Mediterranean environment.
2013
Clarifying which factors cause an increase or decrease in soil organic carbon (SOC) after agricultural abandonment requires integration of data on the temporal dynamics of the plant community and SOC. A chronosequence of abandoned vineyards was studied on a volcanic island (Pantelleria, Italy). Vegetation in the abandoned fields was initially dominated by annual and perennial herbs, then by Hyparrhenia hirta (L.) Stapf, and finally by woody communities. As a consequence, the dominant photosynthetic pathway changed from C3 to C4 and then back to C3. Conversion of a plant community dominated by one photosynthetic pathway to another changes the 13C/12C ratio of inputs to SOC. Using the time si…
The generation of oligodendroglial cells is preserved in the rostral migratory stream during aging
2013
The subventricular zone (SVZ) is the largest source of newly generated cells in the adult mammalian brain. SVZ-derived neuroblasts migrate via the rostral migratory stream (RMS) to the olfactory bulb (OB), where they differentiate into mature neurons. Additionally, a small proportion of SVZ-derived cells contribute to the generation of myelinating oligodendrocytes. The production of new cells in the SVZ decreases during aging, affecting the incorporation of new neurons into the OB. However, the age-related changes that occur across the RMS are not fully understood. In this study we evaluate how aging affects the cellular organization of migrating neuroblast chains, the proliferation, and th…
Corrigendum: Both attention and prediction are necessary for adaptive neuronal tuning in sensory processing

Neurobiological foundations of multisensory processing integration in people with autism spectrum disorders: The role of the medial prefrontal cortex
2014
This review aims to relate the sensory processing problems in people with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD), especially Multisensory interaction (MSI), to the role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) by exploring neuroanatomical findings; brain connectivity and Default Network (DN); global or locally directed attention; and temporal multisensory binding. The mPFC is part of the brain’s DN, which is deactivated when attention is focused on a particular task and activated on rest when spontaneous cognition emerges. In those with ASD, it is hypoactive and the higher the social impairment the greater the atypical activity. With an immature DN, cross-modal integration is impaired, resulting in …
Chemogenetic Suppression of the Subthalamic Nucleus Induces Attentional Deficits and Impulsive Action in a Five-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task in M…
2020
The subthalamic nucleus (STN), a key component of the basal ganglia circuitry, receives inputs from broad cerebral cortical areas and relays cortical activity to subcortical structures. Recent human and animal studies have suggested that executive function, which is assumed to consist of a set of different cognitive processes for controlling behavior, depends on precise information processing between the cerebral cortex and subcortical structures, leading to the idea that the STN contains neurons that transmit the information required for cognitive processing through their activity, and is involved in such cognitive control directly and dynamically. On the other hand, the STN activity also …
Temporal Series Analysis on Avoidable Mortality for the Assessment of an Intervention Program in a Hospital
2017
Background: Avoidable mortality (AM) is one of the most important health indicators (HI) and represents the quality of care in a hospital. Objective: This study measured the efficacy of a training program for a hospital healthcare staff to reduce AM.Methods: This epidemiological study on community intervention analyzed time-series data on HI by semesters from 2008 to 2015. The pre-intervention phase was examined from January 2008 to December 2014; the intervention phase was investigated in the first semester of 2015; and the post-intervention phase was examined in the second semester of 2015.Results: Resindicate a series with a rising tendency until the 14th semester and a pronounced descent…
The effects of benzyladenine and meta-Topolin on in vitro sprouting and regrowth after encapsulation of C35 citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. × Pon…
2016
C35, a hybrid of ‘Ruby Blood’ sweet orange and trifoliate orange, is a promising Citrus rootstock, mainly due to its resistance to Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV), one of the most serious pathology affecting citriculture. The use of resistant rootstocks, such as citranges, is an efficient tool to fight this plant disease. This implies a continuous increasing demand of resistant rootstocks, in order to carry out the turnover of sour orange, still the most used Citrus rootstock in Italy. Micropropagation, can provide innovative solutions to obtain, in a short time and in a small space, a number of plants higher than traditional propagation. Micropropagation efficiency is also affected by the cult…
NOVEL ANTAGONISTS FOR AN Hsp60-BASED ANTICANCER CHAPERONOTHERAPY
2012
The Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are nowadays considered the most important cell chaperones, which result overexpressed in response to a number of cell stress stimuli. In tumor cells, when Hsp60 accumulates in the cytosol, without mitochondrial release, it exerts an anti-apoptotic effect, by inhibiting pro-caspase-3 (pC3) activation. In this context, our study aims to elucidate the structural details of the interaction between Hsp60 and pC3 and to design novel antagonists able to specifically block this interaction. The analysis of virtual screening results highlights the 4-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenylamino)- 6-[(1H-imidazol-4-yl-methyl)-3-carbonitrile-quinolines of type 1 and the N-{5-[1H-imidazo…
Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Cartilage Regeneration Applications
2022
Chondropathies are increasing worldwide, but effective treatments are currently lacking. Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs) transplantation represents a promising approach to counteract the degenerative and inflammatory environment characterizing those pathologies, such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Umbilical cord- (UC-) MSCs gained increasing interest due to their multilineage differentiation potential, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties as well as higher proliferation rates, abundant supply along with no risks for the donor compared to adult MSCs. In addition, UC-MSCs are physiologically adapted to survive in an ischemic and nutrient-poor environment a…
