OBJECTIVE: The present investigation should elucidate which assessment technique for bone quality is most appropriate to estimate preoperatively fixation strength of instrumental spine fusions. METHODS: VDS-screw fixation strength in 50 human cadaveric vertebral bodies was approximated by means of pullout force assessment. Bone quality was assessed by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT), MRT and histomorphometry. For each of these techniques, correlation with axial pull out force strength was investigated. The effect of cement fixation on initial micromotion of the femoral component in condylar knee replacement

Four fresh, cadaveric specimens were fitted with total knee replacements and mounted on a knee joint loading and measuring rig. Femoral component micromotion in the sagittal plane was measured with a transducer during flexion and extension of the specimen. Various condylar designs were used without and with cement. Movement followed a characteristic curve pattern and was less with cement fixation particularly for bone of low trabecular strength as determined by bone sample tests for stiffness. Cement fixation appears to be superior to cementless fixation.

Early Career Women in Academia: An Exploration of Networking Perceptions

This chapter explores women’s networking perceptions by focusing on early career women in social sciences. Within an exploratory research design it asks how early career women define the early career stage in academia, what definitions, meanings and interpretations they give for networks and networking, how they construct the networking process and their ability to establish and/or join networks, as early career researchers and as women. Based on two group interviews with 12 participants, our findings show that early career women in academia favour networking with peers based on shared interests (organic networking). In this study, we examined whether high-school students experienced optimal educational and well-being outcomes when they perceived that they and their classmates received an equal, rather than unequal, and high amount of autonomy support from teachers. In a prospective study that aimed to predict academic grades and well-being outcomes, surface analyses of polynomial regression equations pointed that perceptions of equal autonomy support were the most optimal in terms of yielding highest levels of need satisfaction, autonomous forms of motivation and happiness with math courses.
