Cesarea di Mauretania: la piccola Grecia di Giuba II, tra bronzi e marmi

2020

Punic Iol, renamed Caesarea in honour of Augustus under Juba II, and promoted by the latter to the rank of capital of the kingdom of Mauretania entrusted to him by the princeps in 25 B.C., underwent a splendid phase of development on the model of Hellenistic cities precisely between the end of the 1st century B.C. and the first part of the 1st century A.D. It is very probable that Juba II, who had grown up in Rome, had provided Caesarea with a port, as the intense trade with the Iberian Peninsula, Gaul and Italy, from whose marble quarries material was extracted for architectural constructions and decorations, as well as from those in Greece, would prove. Caesarea has returned a complex of …

Imaging connected porosity of crystalline rock by contrast agent-aided X-ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy

2017

We set out to study connected porosity of crystalline rock using X-ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) with caesium chloride as a contrast agent. Caesium is an important radionuclide regarding the final deposition of nuclear waste and also forms dense phases that can be readily distinguished by X-ray microtomography and SEM-EDS. Six samples from two sites, Olkiluoto (Finland) and Grimsel (Switzerland), where transport properties of crystalline rock are being studied in situ, were investigated using X-ray microtomography and SEM-EDS. The samples were imaged with X-ray microtomography, immersed in a saturated caesium chlorid…

De la historia local a la historia pública: algún defecto y ciertas virtudes = From local to public history. Some weakness and certain achievements

2020

Translational adaptation to heat stress is mediated by RNA 5‐methylcytosine in Caenorhabditis elegans

2021

Abstract Methylation of carbon‐5 of cytosines (m5C) is a post‐transcriptional nucleotide modification of RNA found in all kingdoms of life. While individual m5C‐methyltransferases have been studied, the impact of the global cytosine‐5 methylome on development, homeostasis and stress remains unknown. Here, using Caenorhabditis elegans, we generated the first organism devoid of m5C in RNA, demonstrating that this modification is non‐essential. Using this genetic tool, we determine the localisation and enzymatic specificity of m5C sites in the RNome in vivo. We find that NSUN‐4 acts as a dual rRNA and tRNA methyltransferase in C. elegans mitochondria. In agreement with leucine and proline bein…

Pyrogallarenes as alkali metal receptors: the role of cation-pi interactions in complexation.

2006

Crystallization studies of C-methyl pyrogallarene with potassium, rubidium and caesium bromides or chlorides resulted in a hydrogen bonded molecular cage in which the alkali metal cations are eta6 coordinated to aromatic rings via strong cation-pi interactions.

Validating the use of caesium-137 measurements to estimate soil erosion rates in a small drainage basin in Calabria, Southern Italy

2001

Recent concern for problems of soil degradation and the offsite impacts of accelerated erosion has highlighted the need for improved methods of estimating rates and patterns of soil erosion by water. The use of environmental radionuclides, particularly caesium-137 (137Cs), as a means of estimating rates of soil erosion and deposition is attracting increasing attention and the approach has now been recognised as possessing several important advantages. However, one important uncertainty associated with the use of 137Cs measurements to estimate soil erosion rates is the need to employ a calibration relationship to convert the measured 137Cs inventory to an estimate of the erosion rate. Existi…

Validating erosion rate estimates provided by caesium-137 measurements for two small forested catchments in Calabria, southern Italy

2003

Increasing concern for problems of soil degradation and the off-site impacts of accelerated erosion has generated a need for improved methods of estimating rates and patterns of soil erosion by water. The use of environmental radionuclides, particularly 137 Cs, to estimate erosion rates has attracted increased attention and the approach has been shown to possess several important advantages. However, the use of 137 Cs measurements to estimate erosion rates introduces one important uncertainty, namely, the need to employ a conversion model or relationship to convert the measured reduction in the 137 Cs inventory to an estimate of the erosion rate. There have been few attempts to validate the…

Assessing soil erosion in a small Sicilian basin by caesium-137 measurements and a simplified mass balance model

2000

Abstract The caesium-137 technique affords both an alternative to conventional measurement methods and an effective quantitative estimate of soil redistribution at the basin scale. Among the available calibration relationships which link the degree of increase or depletion of the 137Cs activity relative to the baseline 137Cs input and sediment yield, the mass balance approach has received increased application for its physical basis. First, the applicability of the refined simplified point-based mass balance (RSPMB) model of Zhang et al. (1999) at the scale of the morphological unit is proposed herein. The 137Cs spatial distribution measured in a small Sicilian basin and the spatial distrib…
