Auditory Distraction by Meaningless Irrelevant Speech: A Developmental Study
2014
Summary The irrelevant sound effect (ISE) typically refers to a disruptive effect of a to-be-ignored sound in serial recall tasks, where lists of visually presented items (digits and letters) must be recalled in serial order. Although extensively studied in adults, studies on developmental aspects of the ISE are scarce. The present study aims to increase our understanding of developmental changes of auditory distraction in children beyond serial recall. Two tasks (i.e., word categorization and evaluation of simple mathematical equations) were designed to test retrieval from semantic memory. Proportion correct and reaction times (adjusted for speed–accuracy tradeoff) were measured in 8–9 and…
A fast heuristic for solving the D1EC coloring problem
2010
In this paper we propose an efficient heuristic for solving the Distance-1 Edge Coloring problem (D1EC) for the on-the-fly assignment of orthogonal wireless channels in wireless as soon as a topology change occurs. The coloring algorithm exploits the simulated annealing paradigm, i.e., a generalization of Monte Carlo methods for solving combinatorial problems. We show that the simulated annealing-based coloring converges fast to a sub optimal coloring scheme even for the case of dynamic channel allocation. However, a stateful implementation of the D1EC scheme is needed in order to speed-up the network coloring upon topology changes. In fact, a stateful D1EC reduces the algorithm’s convergen…
Designing portfolios of financial products via integrated simulation and optimization models
1999
We analyze the problem of debt issuance through the sale of innovative financial products. The problem is broken down to questions of designing the financial products, specifying the debt structure with the amount issued in each product, and determining an optimal level of financial leverage. We formulate a hierarchical optimization model to integrate these three issues and provide constructive answers. Input data for the models are obtained from Monte Carlo simulation procedures that generate scenarios of holding period returns of the designed products. The hierarchical optimization model is specialized for the problem of issuing a portfolio of callable bonds to fund mortgage assets. The …
Obtaining the best value for money in adaptive sequential estimation
2010
Abstract In [Kujala, J. V., Richardson, U., & Lyytinen, H. (2010). A Bayesian-optimal principle for learner-friendly adaptation in learning games. Journal of Mathematical Psychology , 54(2), 247–255], we considered an extension of the conventional Bayesian adaptive estimation framework to situations where each observable variable is associated with a certain random cost of observation. We proposed an algorithm that chooses each placement by maximizing the expected gain in utility divided by the expected cost. In this paper, we formally justify this placement rule as an asymptotically optimal solution to the problem of maximizing the expected utility of an experiment that terminates when the…
Convergence for varying measures in the topological case
2023
In this paper convergence theorems for sequences of scalar, vector and multivalued Pettis integrable functions on a topological measure space are proved for varying measures vaguely convergent.
Equivalence Relations on Stonian Spaces
1996
Abstract Quotient spaces of locally compact Stonian spaces which generalize in some sense the concept of Stone representation space of a Boolean algebra are investigated emphasizing the measure theoretical point of view, and a representation theorem for finitely additive measures is proved.
New applications of extremely regular function spaces
2017
Let $L$ be an infinite locally compact Hausdorff topological space. We show that extremely regular subspaces of $C_0(L)$ have very strong diameter $2$ properties and, for every real number $\varepsilon$ with $0<\varepsilon<1$, contain an $\varepsilon$-isometric copy of $c_0$. If $L$ does not contain isolated points they even have the Daugavet property, and thus contain an asymptotically isometric copy of $\ell_1$.
Asplund Operators on Locally Convex Spaces
2000
We study the relationship between the local Radon-Nikodým property, introduced by Defant [4] as a generalization of the Radon-Nikodým property to duals of locally convex spaces, and the Asplund operators, introduced by Robertson [7]. We also give a characterization of Asplund symmetric tensor products of Banach spaces in terms of Asplund maps.
SATURATED FORMATIONS CLOSED UNDER SYLOW NORMALIZERS
2005
In this article we show that a finite soluble group possesses nilpotent Hall subgroups for well-defined sets of primes if and only if its Sylow normalizers satisfy the same property. In fact, this property of groups provides a characterization of the subgroup-closed saturated formations, whose elements are characterized by the Sylow normalizers belonging to the class, in the universe of all finite soluble groups.
Indication and Timing
2016
Tracheostomy is performed in patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation aiming at avoiding the potential detrimental effect of a sustained translaryngeal intubation (e.g. laryngeal oedema, mucosal ulcerations). Potential benefits of tracheostomy in critically ill patients are improved comfort and reduced need for sedation, easier clearance of secretions and oral hygiene, and a possible faster weaning from mechanical ventilation. Controversy exists over optimal timing (early, tracheostomy placement compared with later time points) in patients with respiratory failure. Among the published randomised controlled trials, two large studies did not report a significant advantage of an ear…
