Biometry of the fetal corpus callosum by three-dimensional ultrasound

2013

Objectives To construct reference ranges of quantitative characteristics of the fetal corpus callosum. Methods Women referred to a tertiary center for sonographic examination were recruited to undergo a detailed fetal scan from 17 to 41 weeks of gestation. Three-dimensional (3D) sonographic volumes of normal fetal brains were acquired and analyzed offline. We obtained three different measurements of the corpus callosal length, as well as the height (/thickness) of its segments, namely the rostrum, genu, body and splenium. Results Initially we recruited 604 pregnant women, of whom 138 were excluded because of various disorders/abnormalities, multiple pregnancy or gestational age < 18 weeks. …

Strongly confined atomic localization by Rydberg coherent population trapping

2020

In this letter we investigate the possibility to attain strongly confined atomic localization using interacting Rydberg atoms in a Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) ladder configuration, where a standing-wave (SW) is used as a coupling field in the second leg of the ladder. Depending on the degree of compensation of the Rydberg level energy shift induced by the van der Waals (vdW) interaction, by the coupling field detuning, we distinguish between two antiblockade regimes, i.e. a partial antiblockade (PA) and a full antiblockade (FA). While a periodic pattern of tightly localized regions can be achieved for both regimes, the PA allows much faster converge of spatial confinement yielding a …

A configurable rule based classful token bucket filter network request scheduler for the lustre file system

2017

HPC file systems today work in a best-effort manner where individual applications can flood the file system with requests, effectively leading to a denial of service for all other tasks. This paper presents a classful Token Bucket Filter (TBF) policy for the Lustre file system. The TBF enforces Remote Procedure Call (RPC) rate limitations based on (potentially complex) Quality of Service (QoS) rules. The QoS rules are enforced in Lustre's Object Storage Servers, where each request is assigned to an automatically created QoS class. The proposed QoS implementation for Lustre enables various features for each class including the support for high-priority and real-time requests even under heavy …

Quantifying Structural Subsidy Values for Systemically Important Financial Institutions

2013

Abstract Claimants to Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFIs) would receive transfers when governments are forced into bailouts. Ex ante, this bailout expectation lowers SIFIs’ daily funding costs. The funding cost advantage reflects both the structural level of the government support and the time-varying market valuation for such a support. Based on a large worldwide sample of banks, we estimate the value of the structural subsidy, by exploiting expectations of state support embedded in credit ratings and by applying the long-run average value of the rating bonus. The value of the structural subsidy was already sizable, 60 basis points (bp), as of the end-2007, before the cri…

Financial Management as a Tool for Achieving Stable Firm Growth

2016

Abstract The purpose of this study is to show that financial management in the firm is a tool for achieving stable firm growth and long-term firm stability while problems in firm financial management lead to the inability of firms to ensure sustainable growth of their value. This problem is relevant for firms in all countries. The main objectives of this paper are: to analyse dynamics of value of the largest Latvian firms, to determine the drivers of these dynamics and to establish the main problems slowing the growth of firm value, which are related to the drawbacks in financial management, and to provide suggestions for solving these problems. This study analyses financial management proc…

Intellectual Capital in a Services-Oriented Firm

2013

This chapter discusses the Intellectual Capital (IC) and its management within the services-oriented firms. It argues that IC and its management are as important as in a product-oriented firm. The authors aim to analyze the intellectual capital in the service-oriented firms, focusing on various components, such as human, structural, and relational capital (IC stock), and how to manage it (IC activities). Specifically, the authors examine IC stock and IC activities in a special type of Italian services firms: the Local Public Utility (LPU). These firms are peculiar since were affected by the privatization process and this has made a great need for rethinking the role of intellectual capital …

On finite soluble groups in which Sylow permutability is a transitive relation

2003

A characterisation of finite soluble groups in which Sylow permutability is a transitive relation by means of subgroup embedding properties enjoyed by all the subgroups is proved in the paper. The key point is an extension of a subnormality criterion due to Wielandt.

Poincaré inequalities and Steiner symmetrization

1996

A complete geometric characterization for a general Steiner symmetric domain Ω ⊂ Rn to satisfy the Poincare inequality with exponent p > n−1 is obtained and it is shown that this range of exponents is best possible. In the case where the Steiner symmetric domain is determined by revolving the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function, it is shown that the preceding characterization works for all p > 1 and furthermore for such domains a geometric characterization for a more general Sobolev–Poincare inequality to hold is given. Although the operation of Steiner symmetrization need not always preserve a Poincare inequality, a general class of domains is given for which Poincare inequalities are…

Quantum inductive inference by finite automata

2008

AbstractFreivalds and Smith [R. Freivalds, C.H. Smith Memory limited inductive inference machines, Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science 621 (1992) 19–29] proved that probabilistic limited memory inductive inference machines can learn with probability 1 certain classes of total recursive functions, which cannot be learned by deterministic limited memory inductive inference machines. We introduce quantum limited memory inductive inference machines as quantum finite automata acting as inductive inference machines. These machines, we show, can learn classes of total recursive functions not learnable by any deterministic, nor even by probabilistic, limited memory inductive inference machin…
