Evaluation the oral hygiene conditions, oral Candida colonization and salivary Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli density in a group of β-thalasse…
2019
Background In this study, the prevalence and distribution of dental caries and oral hygiene conditions in a group of patients with β-TM are evaluated and the results compared to age-and gender-matched healthy patients. In addition, oral candida colonization and the density of Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) and Lactobacilli in the total saliva are assessed. Material and Methods This study involved 59 β-TM patients between 6-16 years old (mean:11.59±3.22), who applied to the Department of Pedodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Akdeniz University, with ongoing follow-up, treatment and regular blood transfusions. All enrolled patients were diagnosed with β-TM by the Department of Pediatric Hematol…
Proliferative response of synovial fluid and peripheral blood mononuclear cells to arthritogenic and non-arthritogenic microbial antigens and to the …
1990
Cellular immune responses to microbial antigens have been implicated in the pathogenesis of some forms of arthritis including reactive arthritis, Reiter's syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis. We investigated the proliferative T cell responses of paired peripheral blood (PB) and synovial fluid (SF) mononuclear cells (MC) to so-called arthritogenic bacteria (Yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella typhimurium), to control antigens, such as Candida albicans, mumps virus and purified protein derivative, to the recombinant mycobacterial 65-kDa heat-shock protein (hsp 65) and the mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA) in 16 patients with different inflammatory rheumatic diseases. T…
Candida biotypes in patients with oral leukoplakia and lichen planus. Candida biotypes in leukoplakia and lichen planus.
1996
Prevalence of yeasts in 35 leukoplakia and 34 oral lichen planus patients was compared with that observed in persons without oral diseases. Serotype and morphotype were determined on Candida albicans isolates. Yeasts were isolated from the oral cavity specimens of 43.7% of the patients. C. albicans (serotype A) was the predominant species (76% in leukoplakia, 88.2% in lichen planus and 60.8% in healthy persons). Sixteen morphotypes were encountered on malt extract agar, being 732, 733, 734, 753 and 754 the most frequently found. Morphotypes SP1N and SP1Y were the most common on Sabouraud-trypheniltetrazolium agar (68.4% of the isolates from leukoplakia and 73.3% from lichen planus, but only…
Antigenic cell wall mannoproteins in Candida albicans isolates and in other Candida species.
1991
Polyclonal antibodies (pAbs) and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), raised against mannoprotein components from Candida albicans ATCC 26555 (serotype A) blastoconidia and mycelial cell walls, were used to investigate antigenic similarities among wall mannoproteins from other C. albicans serotype A and B strains, and from C. tropicalis and C. guilliermondii. Radioactively labelled walls isolated from cells grown at either 28 degrees C or 37 degrees C were digested with a beta-glucanase complex (Zymolyase 20T) to release cell-wall-bound mannoproteins. Numerous molecular species with different electrophoretic mobilities were released from the various isolates. Differences appeared to be related to …

High-density SNP markers elucidate the genetic divergence and population structure of Noticiana sheep breed in the Mediterranean context
2023
Among livestock species, sheep have played an early major role in the Mediterranean area. Italy has a long history of sheep breeding and, despite a dramatic contraction in numbers, still raise several local populations that may represent a unique source of genetic diversity. The Noticiana is a breed of the south-eastern part of Sicily appreciated both for its dairy products and for its resistance to harsh environment. In this study, the high-density Illumina Ovine SNP600K BeadChip array was used for the first genome-wide characterization of 48 individuals of Noticiana sheep to investigate its diversity, the genome structure and the relationship within the context of worldwide and Italian br…
Exploring genome-wide differentiation and signatures of selection in Italian and North American Holstein populations
2023
Among Italian dairy cattle, the Holstein is the most reared breed for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano protected designation of origin cheese, which represents one of the most renowned products in the entire Italian dairy industry. In this work, we used a medium-density genome-wide data set consisting of 79,464 imputed SNPs to study the genetic structure of Italian Holstein breed, including the population reared in the area of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese production, and assessing its distinctiveness from the North American population. Multidimensional scaling and ADMIXTURE approaches were used to explore the genetic structure among populations. We also investigated putative genomic regi…
Genome-wide scan for Runs of Homozygosity in Valle del Belice sheep
2017
The current availability of very large numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) throughout the genome makes these markers particularly suitable for the detection of genomic regions where a reduction in heterozygosity occurred and offers new opportunities to improve the accuracy of inbreeding (F) estimates. Runs of homozygosity (ROH) are contiguous lengths of homozygous segments of the genome where the two haplotypes inherited from the parents are identical. Here, we investigated the occurrence and the distribution of ROH in medium-density SNP genotypes (~ 50 000) in order to characterize autozygosity in 512 individuals of Valle del Belice sheep and identify the regions of the genom…
Distribution of functional variants within Runs of Homozygosity in four Italian cattle breeds
2017
Several methods have been used to identify genomic regions subjected to selective sweeps. An alternative method can make use of runs of homozygosity (ROH), defined as stretches of homozygous regions in a genome. The aim of the present study was to detect selective sweeps using ROH in four cattle breeds. Individuals of Cinisara (71), Modicana (72),Reggiana (168) and Italian Holstein (96) were genotyped with the Illumina Bovine50SNP v2 BeadChip. To identify genomic regions that were most commonly associated with ROH within each breed, the percentage of occurrences of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in ROH was calculated across animals. The genomic regions most commonly associated with …
Weighted Single-Step Genome-Wide Association Study Uncovers Known and Novel Candidate Genomic Regions for Milk Production Traits and Somatic Cell Sco…
2022
The objective of this study was to uncover genomic regions explaining a substantial proportion of the genetic variance in milk production traits and somatic cell score in a Valle del Belice dairy sheep. Weighted single-step genome-wide association studies (WssGWAS) were conducted for milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), fat percentage (FAT%), protein yield (PY), protein percentage (PROT%), and somatic cell score (SCS). In addition, our aim was also to identify candidate genes within genomic regions that explained the highest proportions of genetic variance. Overall, the full pedigree consists of 5534 animals, of which 1813 ewes had milk data (15,008 records), and 481 ewes were genotyped with a …
