Probabilistic maturation reaction norms assessed from mark-recaptures of wild fish in their natural habitat
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Ecology and Evolution. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/ece3.1044 Open Access Reaction norms are a valuable tool in evolutionary biology. Lately, the probabilistic maturation reaction norm approach, describing probabilities of maturing at combinations of age and body size, has been much applied for testing whether phenotypic changes in exploited populations of fish are mainly plastic or involving an evolutionary component. However, due to typical field data limitations, with imperfect knowledge about individual life histories, this demographic method still needs to be assessed. Using 13 years of direct mark-recap…
Valencia 1936-1939. La infancia bajo las bombas. Los refugios antiaereos de los centros escolares
2018
Contemporary spatial and environmental factors determine vascular plant species richness on highly fragmented meadows in Central Finland
2018
Context Habitat loss is a major threat to biodiversity. It can create temporal lags in decline of species in relation to destruction of habitat coverage. Plant species specialized in semi-natural grasslands, especially meadows, often express such extinction debt. Objectives We studied habitat loss and fragmentation of meadows and examined whether the changes in meadow coverage had caused an extinction debt on vascular plants. We also studied whether historical or present landscape patterns or contemporary environmental factors were more important determinants of species occurrence. Methods We surveyed the plant species assemblages of 12 grazed and 12 mown meadows in Central Finland and dete…
Environmental mitigation hierarchy and biodiversity offsets revisited through habitat connectivity modelling.
2020
International audience; Biodiversity loss is accelerating because of unceasing human activity and land clearing for development projects (urbanisation, transport infrastructure, mining and quarrying …). Environmental policy-makers and managers in different countries worldwide have proposed the mitigation hierarchy to ensure the goal of “no net loss (NNL) of biodiversity” and have included this principle in environmental impact assessment processes. However, spatial configuration is hardly ever taken into account in the mitigation hierarchy even though it would greatly benefit from recent developments in habitat connectivity modelling incorporating landscape graphs. Meanwhile, national, Euro…
Design and construction of halogen-bonded capsules and cages
2017
This thesis describes the design, synthesis and characterization of supramolecular halogen-bonded capsules and cages from multivalent ligands. In the first part of the thesis, an overview to halogen bonding is provided. After discussing the general features of the halogen bonding, the most frequently used halogen bond donors are introduced and examples of their utilization in halogen-bonded systems are discussed. The chapter also presents recent advances made in the field of halogen-bonded supramolecular capsules. The first part of the thesis also includes a review of halogen-bonded complexes involving halonium ions, and a brief introduction to [N···X+···N] halogen bonds is provided along w…
The “nitrogen effect” : Complexation with macrocycles potentiates fused heterocycles to form halogen bonds in competitive solvents
2023
Weak intermolecular forces are typically very difficult to observe in highly competitive polar protic solvents as they are overwhelmed by the quantity of competing solvent. This is even more challenging for three-component ternary assemblies of pure organic compounds. In this work, we overcome these complications by leveraging the binding of fused aromatic N-heterocycles in an open resorcinarene cavity to template the formation of a three-component halogen-bonded ternary assembly in a protic polar solvent system. peerReviewed
IEEE Std. 1459 power quantities ratio approaches for simplified harmonic emissions assessment
2018
The paper investigates the suitability of using power ratio parameters for harmonic emissions assessment at the point of common coupling (PCC). The study is carried out starting from the IEEE Std. 1459-2010 apparent power decomposition, where power factors are defined for evaluating line utilization and harmonic pollution levels. In addition, the study investigates the behavior of new parameters, which are expressed in terms of ratio between IEEE Std. 1459-2010 power quantities. The study is carried out for both single-phase and three-phase case, also considering the presence of capacitors. ? 2018 IEEE.

Heat capacity and thermal conductivity of multiferroics Bi1-xPrxFeO3
2019
The heat capacity and thermal conductivity of multiferroics Bi1–xPrxFeO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50) has been studied in the temperature range of 130–800 K. A slight substitution of praseodymium for bismuth is found to lead to a noticeable shift of the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature whilst the heat capacity increases. The temperature dependences of the heat capacity and thermal conductivity exhibit additional anomalies during phase transitions. The experimental results suggest that the excess heat capacity can be attributed to the Schottky effect for three-level states. The basic mechanisms of the heat transfer of phonons are highlighted and the dependence of the mean free path on temper…
Low temperature heat capacity of phononic crystal membranes
2016
Phononic crystal (PnC) membranes are a promising solution to improve sensitivity of bolometric sensor devices operating at low temperatures. Previous work has concentrated only on tuning thermal conductance, but significant changes to the heat capacity are also expected due to the modification of the phonon modes. Here, we calculate the area-specific heat capacity for thin (37.5 - 300 nm) silicon and silicon nitride PnC membranes with cylindrical hole patterns of varying period, in the temperature range 1 - 350 mK. We compare the results to two- and three-dimensional Debye models, as the 3D Debye model is known to give an accurate estimate for the low-temperature heat capacity of a bulk sam…
