Building sustainable contextual ambidexterity through routines: a case study from information technology firms

The purpose of this paper is to explain the role that routines play in achieving sustainable organisational ambidexterity in information technology (IT) firms. Our exploratory analysis of four case studies reveals the key importance of routines in setting the context for sustainable ambidexterity. Companies build up contextual ambidexterity through routines derived from normalization of processes, normalization of skills, and normalization of results. The findings of the study show that routines support IT professionals to decide whether to exploit or explore in each particular case. This chapter discusses seventeenth-century Sweden, where academically trained advocates and procurators emerged but attempts of advocacy monopoly failed. The case of Gabriel Abrahamsson—a son of a pastor, a former cavalryman and farmer, and, later on, a lower-level civil servant in Helsinki—proves that no specific privileged status or academic education was needed for advocacy in lower courts. The tradition to use any reasonable man as a legal representative continued, and trusted men from various social backgrounds with self-acquired legal skills acted as lay advocates. Regional financial development and bank competition: effects on firms' growth

This paper analyses the effect of regional financial development and bank competition on firms' growth using the Spanish provinces as a testing ground. The results show that firms in industries with a greater dependence on external finance grow faster in more financially developed provinces. The results also show that bank monopoly power has an inverted-‘U’ effect on firms' growth, suggesting that market power has its highest effect at intermediate values.
