Summary The study concerns the behaviour of steel MR-frames subjected to vertical and lateral forces, not properly designed according to capacity design criteria, and upgraded by means of encasing the steel columns with concrete having different grade. The purpose of the paper is to examine if the proposed technique allows one to adequately increase the lateral stiffness and the resistance of the frames. Pressurized flow electrochromatography (PEC) is a hybrid of capillary LC and capillary electroendosmotic chromatography (CEC). Both a pressure gradient and an electric field are applied across a packed capillary. The feasability of a simple, easy to handle PEC instrumentation is demonstrated. Home made capillary columns with four different silica-based reversed phase packings have been operated under PEC conditions separating non ionic and ionic low molecular weight analytes. Abstract Resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids, macrocyclic molecules built up by four alkylidene-bridged resorcinol units, were synthesized and used as pseudostationary phases in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). Resorcarenes provide a stable structure and good solubility in electrolytes even with organic modifiers. Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer

Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1 g ). The results, reported in a companion paper, point out that the weak layer plays an important role in the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing if it falls within the ground volume relevant to the behaviour of the sand–footing system. The same problem was also investigated by means of centrifuge tests on reduced-scale models at 25 g and 40 g .
