Beneficial effects of running and milk protein supplements on Sirtuins and risk factors of metabolic disorders in rats with low aerobic capacity

2019

Background. Physical activity and dietary intake of dairy products are associated with improved metabolic health. Dairy products are rich with branched chain amino acids that are essential for energy production. To gain insight into the mechanisms underlying the benefit of the sub-chronic effects of running and intake of milk protein supplements, we studied Low Capacity Runner rats (LCR), a rodent exercise model with risk for metabolic disorders. We especially focused on the role of Sirtuins, energy level dependent proteins that affect many cellular metabolic processes. Methods. Forty-seven adult LCR female rats sedentary or running voluntarily in wheels were fed normal chow and given suppl…

Associations of physical performance and physical activity with mental well-being in middle-aged women

2021

Abstract Background To investigate whether physical performance is independently of physical activity (PA) associated with positive and negative dimensions of mental well-being in middle-aged women. Methods Data were drawn from the Estrogenic Regulation of Muscle Apoptosis (ERMA) study in which women 47 to 55 years were randomly selected from the Finnish National Registry. They (n = 909) participated in measurements of physical performance (handgrip force, knee extension force, vertical jumping height, maximal walking speed, and six-minute walking distance). Both mental well-being (the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule…

Application of Zero Exclusion Condition to Stability Analysis of Computer Networks

2016

Stability, or robust [Dscr ]-stability analysis of computer network considered as a dynamic system, relies on increasing the speed of data transmission while minimizing the queuing time delays of its packets in the router buffers that can affect the overall data flow of the network traffic. We consider a zero exclusion condition as an effective method for testing and analyzing the computer networks stability. Our findings indicate that keeping control over the queuing time delays as well as including some factors of the RED algorithm and its variants, which we present in this paper, can improve the quality of network services significantly. Our method can be applicable both to single-loop a…

Perceived reason to hinder ACAP increase

2014

We derive through literature review that lack of internal R&D investment, lack of contribution into absorptive capacity (ACAP) nurturing at the initial phase of a project, and lack of adequate training prevent ACAP improvement. We conduct 41 interviews using a case study method on four organizations. Based on the empirical findings, it is revealed that most of practitioners know how ACAP can be improved. But still, they do not offer the important incentives and follow some traditional ways of performing their tasks. We further explore what prevents practitioners from implementing practices towards ACAP improvement. From our empirical findings we identify and analyze perceived reasons that h…

Selective breeding for endurance running capacity affects cognitive but not motor learning in rats

2012

The ability to utilize oxygen has been shown to affect a wide variety of physiological factors often considered beneficial for survival. As the ability to learn can be seen as one of the core factors of survival in mammals, we studied whether selective breeding for endurance running, an indication of aerobic capacity, also has an effect on learning. Rats selectively bred over 23 generations for their ability to perform forced treadmill running were trained in an appetitively motivated discrimination-reversal classical conditioning task, an alternating T-maze task followed by a rule change (from a shift-win to stay-win rule) and motor learning task. In the discrimination-reversal and T-maze …

Long-transient conoscopic pattern technique

1999

0038-1098; Recent results on laser induced anisotropy in terbium gallium garnet are extended to the dynamic regime. We observed that the characteristic conoscopic pattern formation time presents a quadratic dependence on the beam size. The observed pattern intensity is accounted for by a simple analytical formula. The transient refractive index change due to thermal stress in the terbium gallium garnet is determined. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Examining Open Innovation in Science (OIS): what Open Innovation can and cannot offer the science of science

2021

Scholars across disciplines increasingly hear calls for more open andcollaborative approaches to scientific research. The concept of OpenInnovation in Science (OIS) provides a framework that integratesdispersed research efforts aiming to understand the antecedents, contingencies, and consequences of applying open and collaborativeresearch practices. While the OIS framework has already been taken upby science of science scholars, its conceptual underpinnings requirefurther specification. In this essay, we critically examine the OIS conceptand bring to light two key aspects: 1) how OIS builds upon OpenInnovation (OI) research by adopting its attention to boundary-crossingknowledge flows and by…
