“Randomised trial comparing biweekly oxaliplatin plus oral capecitabine versus oxaliplatin plus i.v. bolus fluorouracil/leucovorin in metastatic colo…

2009

PURPOSE: Oxaliplatin combined with either fluorouracil/leucovorin (OXAFAFU) or capecitabine (OXXEL) has a demonstrated activity in metastatic colorectal cancer patients. We aimed at comparing these two regimens in terms of response rate (RR), safety, progression-free survival (PFS), and quality of life (QoL) of patients. METHODS: A total of 322 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer were randomized to receive biweekly: oxaliplatin 100 mg/m(2) i.v. on day 1, capecitabine 1,000 mg/m(2) orally twice daily from day 1 to day 11 (OXXEL); or oxaliplatin 85 mg/m(2) i.v. on day 1; 6S-leucovorin 250 mg/m(2) i.v. and fluorouracil 850 mg/m(2) i.v. on day 2 (OXAFAFU). RESULTS: Eleven complete and 42…

Diffusion modeling of COVID-19 under lockdown

2021

Viral immune evasion by sequence variation is a significant barrier to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine design and coronavirus disease-2019 diffusion under lockdown are unpredictable with subsequent waves. Our group has developed a computational model rooted in physics to address this challenge, aiming to predict the fitness landscape of SARS-CoV-2 diffusion using a variant of the bidimensional Ising model (2DIMV) connected seasonally. The 2DIMV works in a closed system composed of limited interaction subjects and conditioned by only temperature changes. Markov chain Monte Carlo method shows that an increase in temperature implicates reduced virus diffusi…

Shoreline Evolution and Environmental Changes at the NW Area of the Gulf of Gela (Sicily, Italy)

2021

Coastal areas are among the most biologically productive, dynamic and valued ecosystems on Earth. They are subject to changes that greatly vary in scale, time and duration and to additional pressures resulting from anthropogenic activities. The aim of this work was to investigate the shoreline evolution and the main environmental changes of the coastal stretch between the towns of Licata and Gela (in the Gulf of Gela, Sicily, Italy). The methodology used in this work included the analysis of: (i) shoreline changes over the long- and medium-term periods (1955–2019 and 1989–2019, respectively), (ii) dune system fragmentation and (iii) the impact of coastal structures (harbours and breakwaters…

The Geologic History of the Marginal Basins Along the North Shore of the Gulf of Guinea

1973

The North shore of the Gulf of Guinea forms the coastline of Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Dahomey, Nigeria, and the Cameroons (Fig. 1). The westernmost point of the coastal region to be discussed here is Cape Palmas (long 8° W) on the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast. The easternmost limit is formed by the Cameroons Bight at long 9° 30′ E. The marginal basins are limited to the north by the upper Guinea arch which stretches for more than 2000 km in a west-east direction from Liberia to the Cameroons. In this arch region the metamorphic basement is exposed over wide areas. Some of the details of this basement are discussed by Hurley and Rand, and by Grant in this book. Fo…

Landscape Dynamics and Cultural Contacts in the Territory of Himera in the Archaic Period

2022

In central-northern Sicily, the watershed area between the northern and southern Imera and Platani rivers has already been recognized for years as a pivotal area in relations between the different areas of the island, both in reference to the political and economic projections of the colonial poleis , especially between Himera, Akragas, both in reference to economic relations and cultural contacts with indigenous communities. This area is very crucial context of encounter and confrontation between communities, in which complex systems of territorial articulation can be grasped. The position of the settlements along the basins of the two Himera highlights a close connection in terms of inter…

Increased frequencies of CD11b+CD33+CD14+HLA-DRlowmyeloid-derived suppressor cells are an early event in melanoma patients

2014

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogeneous cell population characterized by immunosuppressive activity. Elevated levels of MDSC in peripheral blood are found in inflammatory diseases as well as in malignant tumors where they are supposed to be major contributors to mechanisms of tumor-associated tolerance. We investigated the frequency and function of MDSC in peripheral blood of melanoma patients and observed an accumulation of CD11b(+) CD33(+) CD14(+) HLA-DR(low) MDSC in all stages of disease (I-IV), including early stage I patients. Disease progression and enhanced tumor burden did not result in a further increase in frequencies or change in phenotype of MDSC. By investig…
