Grouping facilitates avoidance of parasites by fish

2013

Background. Parasite distribution is often highly heterogeneous, and intensity of infection depends, among other things, on how well hosts can avoid areas with a high concentration of parasites. We studied the role of fish behaviour in avoiding microhabitats with a high infection risk using Oncorhynchus mykiss and cercariae of Diplostomum pseudospathaceum as a model. Spatial distribution of parasites in experimental tanks was highly heterogeneous. We hypothesized that fish in groups are better at recognizing a parasitized area and avoiding it than solitary fish. Methods. Number of fish, either solitary or in groups of 5, was recorded in different compartments of a shuttle tank where fish co…

Manipulation of fish host by eye flukes in relation to cataract formation and parasite infectivity

2005

Trophically transmitted parasites may predispose infected hosts to predation by altering host behaviour, which can be either an adaptation of the parasites to enhance transmission to the next hosts in the life cycle or a nonadaptive side-effect of infection. In an experimental study, we investigated host manipulation by Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda), an eye fluke of fish, to evaluate its adaptive value as a parasite strategy to increase transmission efficiency to bird hosts. The parasite induces cataract formation in the lenses of fish eyes, and predisposes fish to predation by reducing their escape response. We examined the effect of developmental stage and the number of parasites on …

Analysis of dust exposure during chainsaw forest operations

2017

Abstract: In 1999, the European Union proclaimed hardwood dust carcinogenic based on the classification of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) issued in 1995. The operational exposure limit (OEL) for inhalable wood dust has been set to 5 mg m-3 by EU directives, though in different countries the OEL ranges from 1 to 5 mg m-3. The objective of this study was to determine the exposure to wood dust of forest workers in chainsaw cutting and processing and suggest possible countermeasures. The study took into consideration different silvicultural treatments (coppice clear cut, conifer thinning, conifer pruning, and sanitary cut) and chainsaw fuel (normal two-stroke gasoline mi…

Aligning Inner Peripheries with rural development in Italy: Territorial evidence to support policy contextualization

2021

Abstract Inner Peripheries is a recent concept based on both peripherality and marginality features, thus far from the commonly adopted geographical notion of periphery. Inner Peripheries are fragile territories covering rural Europe, which suffer from depopulation, low economic potential, and weak territorial cohesion. However, these territories are extremely important for the provision of goods and services, and the stewardship of natural and semi-natural environments. Such dichotomous condition poses several challenges for planning in the EU context, particularly regarding the implementation of the Rural Development Policy. Therefore, current planning needs to contextualize the policy im…

“Alimental, querido Watson” – Escape room virtual para la asignatura de Alimentación y Dietética

2021

[EN] "Alimental, querido Watson" is a digital educational escape room created for the subject "Nutrition and Dietetics" of the degree in Medicine at the University of Valencia. The objective of this activity was to maintain the students participation and adherence in the subject in spite of being teached in an on-line asynchronous way during the 2020/2021 academic year. Furthemore, we also wanted to encourage their learning by solving the different enigmas, always related to the contents of the subject. The results from this activity show that, as expected, students had a greater involvement and satisfaction with the activity, as well as a higher academic performance. Therefore, our experie…

What does happen when an insect pest follows its host plant and viceversa?

2015

Invasive species are usually well known but only make up a small percentage of the European’s alien plants and insects. The ways these exotic species interact with our natural and cultural heritage are very complex and even some species considered invasive had and could have positive aspects on some European landscape and culture. A close look at the complicated relationship between non-native and native plants and insects in the Mediterranean areas reveals some unexpected twists in the story. Here are some cases of when aliens can threaten our cultural heritage or being part of it

The Intangible Cultural Landscape of the Banda Primitiva de Llíria

2021

AbstractThe Banda Primitiva de Llíria is presented as an open heritage resource, which has been built on the uses, values and symbols assigned to it by the local town of Llíria and its inhabitants over the musical society’s two centuries of history. This work focuses on analysing how this musical phenomenon contributes to positioning creativity and cultural industries at the centre of local development, reinforcing the identity elements of Llíria and the Valencian Region. It intends to support the safeguarding, respect and awareness of one of the oldest civic bands in Spain, providing greater visibility and creating positive recognition of the fundamental importance of this form of intangib…

Hybridization in Capparis spinosa L.: Molecular and morphological evidence from a Mediterranean island complex

2014

Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) molecular markers and morphological analysis were used in order to characterize wild populations and cultivated forms of orphan crop species Capparis spinosa L. in a Mediterranean island complex. Nineteen wild populations belonging to two different subspecies, C. spinosa subsp. spinosa and subsp. rupestris, were sampled in different environments in Sicily and the surrounding islets Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Salina. Different biotypes cultivated in Pantelleria and Salina were analyzed. Six ISSR primers were selected for genetic characterization, and all clear and reproducible bands were scored and analyzed. Among the 47 ISSR bands obtained, 97.5% were pol…

From the banks of Upper Tigris River to the Zagros Highlands. The Tübingen Eastern Ḫabur Archaeological Survey. Trial season 2013

2016

After decades of strife and unrest, during which Northern Iraq remained closed to the outside world, a new era of international scientific enterprise has begun in this region thanks to the recent democratic and civil upturn and its subsequent economic resurgence. In the last few years, together with the restoration and refurbishment of historical monuments, there has also been a spread of new archaeological undertakings in the form of surveys and excavations, the quality and quantity of which is fully shown in the present volume. A Tübingen University research project was initiated in the northernmost part of Iraqi-Kurdistan, in the province of Dohuk. The research area is located at the foo…

Pesticide occurrence in the waters of Júcar River, Spain from different farming landscapes.

2017

A combined methodology to identify and quantify farming chemicals in the entire Júcar River basin has been developed. The procedure consisted of the application of environmental forensic criteria associating laboratory analytical samples, cartographic analysis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and synthetic statistical analysis. Sampling involved the collection of 15 samples in surface waters distributed alongside the Júcar River and its two main tributaries (Cabriel and Magro Rivers). The analytical procedure involves generic sample extraction and selective determination of up to 50 target pesticides by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Geogra…
