The open metastable structure of a collapsible sand: fabric and bonding

This paper deals with the compositional and textural characteristics determining open metastable structures in the pleistocenic sand outcropping in the Agrigento district (Sicily). The aim of the study was to individuate the bonding types occurring between grains that could generate matric suction phenomena. The composition and microfabric were characterised by means of granulometry, porosimetry, permeability, optical and ESEM-EDS microscopy, thermogravimetry and XR diffractometry, electric conductivity, and ionic chromatography. A Universal Health Care System? Unmet Need for Medical Care Among Regular and Irregular Immigrants in Italy

Italy has a universal health care system that covers, in principle, the whole resident population, irrespective of citizenship and legal status. This study calculates the prevalence of unmet need for medical care among Italian citizens, regular and irregular immigrants and estimates logistic regression models to assess whether differences by citizenship and legal status hold true once adjusting for potential confounders. The analysis is based on two Surveys on Income and Living Conditions of Italian households and households with foreigners. Determination of major carotenoids in vegetables by capillary electrochromatography.

A simple and rapid method for the isocratic separation and determination of carotenoids (carotenes and xanthophylls) in vegetables by CEC is described. The capillary column (100 microm ID, 25 cm effective length) was packed with 3 microm Hypersil ODS particles. The optimized mobile phase contained 60% ACN, 35% THF and 5% of a 5 mM Tris aqueous buffer of pH 8. beta-Carotene, lycopene and lutein were separated with efficiencies of 66 000-128 000 plates/m within a short time (less than 12 min for the last peak eluted, 13/13'-cis-beta-carotene). Lichen planus is believed to represent an abnormal immune response in which epithelial cells are recognized as foreign, secondary to changes in the antigenicity of the cell surface. I use this concept, which I have developed, to study personal names in family networks and in royal families in particular. This research combines the approaches and methodologies of collective biography, microhistory and the history of mentalities.
