The presence of multipotent cells in several adult and embryo-related tissues opened new paths for their use in regenerative medicine. Extraembryonic tissues such as umbilical cord are considered a promising source of stem cells, potentially useful in therapy. The Fibril-associated Collagen IX Provides a Novel Mechanism for Cell Adhesion to Cartilaginous Matrix

Collagen IX is the prototype fibril-associated collagen with interruptions in triple helix. In human cartilage it covers collagen fibrils, but its putative cellular receptors have been unknown. The reverse transcription-PCR analysis of human fetal tissues suggested that based on their distribution all four collagen receptor integrins, namely alpha1beta1, alpha2beta1, alpha10beta1, and alpha11beta1, are possible receptors for collagen IX. Treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis following permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis is a serious illness requiring emergency intervention to resolve the potentially life-threatening respiratory distress. Several surgical procedures were proposed to help improve the airway and to eliminate the tracheostoma in those patients with permanent paralysis. All the procedures have their own advantages and disadvantages. We conducted a retrospective study of 30 patients affected by bilateral vocal cord paralysis following total thyroidectomy. Thyroid cartilage involvement in patient affected by IgA multiple myeloma: case report.

Neoplasms originating from plasma cell are rare in the head and neck region. A correct clinical evaluation is very important in order to formulate a differential diagnosis as well as to distinguish local from metastatic disease. We report a case of larynx involvement by an IgA multiple myeloma in a 69-year-old female diagnosed in October 2004 and treated with chemotherapy; the 1 year control do not show progression of disease and the laryngeal lesion is unchanged. We highlight the radiological findings and clinical features to suspect plasma cell tumors in cases with a similar presentation.

Objective Growing evidences indicate that the histone methyltransferase EZH2 (enhancer of zeste homolog 2) may be an appropriate therapeutic target in some tumors. Indeed, a high expression of EZH2 is correlated with poor prognosis and metastasis in many cancers. In addition, 3-Deazaneplanocin A (DZNep), an S-adenosyl-L homocysteine hydrolase inhibitor which induces EZH2 protein depletion, leads to cell death in several cancers and tumors. Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder with marked clinical and radiographic variability. Traditionally, the mild "Ribbing" and severe "Fairbank" types have been used to define a broad phenotypic spectrum. We have identified an 18 bp deletion in exon 49 of the type II procollagen gene (COL2A1) in a patient with Kniest dysplasia. The deletion is located at the very C-terminus of the helical domain and removes two of three Gly-Pro-Pro triplets at positions 1007-1012, which are thought to be involved in helix formation and stability. Morphological investigation of an iliac crest biopsy showed large inclusions in the endoplasmic reticulum of chondrocytes, reflecting impaired secretion of type II collagen.
