The Transcallosal Anterior Interfoniceal Approach: A Microsurgical Anatomy Study

2014

Objectives: A plethora of surgical strategies have been described to reach deeply lesions situated within the third ventricle, including the Rosenfeld or anterior transcallosal interfoniceal approach (TAIF). Firstly, introduced in 2001, it consists of a small callosotomy followed by the midline transseptal dissection of fornices to enter the roof of the third ventricle. The aim of this microsurgical anatomy study is to describe and show each stage of the surgical procedure, focusing on the possible trajectories to anatomic landmarks. Participants: A total of twenty adult cadaveric specimens were used in this study. Using x3 to x40 magnifications the surgical dissection was carried out in a …

Decomposition rate and biochemical fate of carbon from natural polymers and microplastics in boreal lakes

2022

Microbial mineralization of organic compounds is essential for carbon recycling in food webs. Microbes can decompose terrestrial recalcitrant and semi-recalcitrant polymers such as lignin and cellulose, which are precursors for humus formation. In addition to naturally occurring recalcitrant substrates, microplastics have been found in various aquatic environments. However, microbial utilization of lignin, hemicellulose, and microplastics as carbon sources in freshwaters and their biochemical fate and mineralization rate in freshwaters is poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the biochemical fate and mineralization rates of several natural and synthetic polymer-deri…

Greater mitochondrial energy production provides resistance to ocean acidification in "winning" hermatypic corals

2021

Coral communities around the world are projected to be negatively affected by ocean acidification. Not all coral species will respond in the same manner to rising CO2 levels. Evidence from naturally acidified areas such as CO2 seeps have shown that although a few species are resistant to elevated CO2, most lack sufficient resistance resulting in their decline. This has led to the simple grouping of coral species into “winners” and “losers,” but the physiological traits supporting this ecological assessment are yet to be fully understood. Here using CO2 seeps, in two biogeographically distinct regions, we investigated whether physiological traits related to energy production [mitochondrial e…

Inter-laboratory differences in the apparent quantum yield for the photochemical production of dissolved inorganic carbon in inland waters and implic…

2022

Solar radiation initiates photochemical oxidation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in inland waters, contributing to their carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Models can determine photochemical DIC production over large spatiotemporal scales and assess its role in aquatic C cycling. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) spectrum for photochemical DIC production, defined as mol DIC produced per mol chromophoric dissolved organic matter-absorbed photons, is a critical model parameter. In previous studies, the principle for the determination of AQY spectra is the same but methodological specifics differ, and the extent to which these differences influenc…

Taxonomy and conservation ofPancratium maritimum(Amaryllidaceae) and relatives in the Central Mediterranean

2015

Pancratium maritimum L. (Amaryllidaceae) is a geophyte occurring in the Mediterranean region, from the Black Sea to part of the Atlantic coast. This plant is receiving much attention from the international scientific community due to its value as a bioindicator, the potential industrial value of its chemical compounds, and its use as a commercial ornamental plant. Plant morphometry and sequences of three plastid DNA regions (rbcL, matK, trnH-psbA) were used to assess the phenotypic and genetic variability of this taxon and its closest congeneric species (in particular Pancratium linosae, from the volcanic island of Linosa) in the Central Mediterranean (Sicily, Tunisia and surrounding island…

O materinstvu na drugi način - prećutane strane materinstva u romanu "Optužena" Slavenke Drakulić

2017

Slavenka Drakulić is a Croatian journalist and writer, known as a feminist who writes about the problems in women’s lives. In the novel Optužena (2012), she demonstrates in an interesting, artistic way the less known questions of motherhood, often ignored and tabooed in social discourse. It is known that starting from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s ideas about maternity, it has been idealized and used in order to constrain women within the patriarchal system, by identifying them primarily as mothers. The concepts of Sigmund Freud, who believed maternity and maternal love to be natural and appropriate for every “standard” woman, contributed to turning into taboos some pathologies connected with mat…

A new species within the Centaurea busambarensis complex (Asteraceae, Cardueae) from Sicily

2022

The Centaurea busambarensis group is made up by eight species endemic to Sicily. We statistically evaluated a population found on the Nebrodi Mountain (NE Sicily) to verify if the observed morphological differences with the already known taxa justified the description of a new one. It resulted in being sufficiently distinct to deserve recognition at the species level. Centaurea valdemonensis, a new species endemic to Sicily is described and illustrated here. It is confined to the Nebrodi Mountains (NE Sicily). The distinction of this taxon from the others belonging to the C. busambarensis complex has been supported with the aid of statistical analyses on morphological characters. The differ…
