Contributions of mean and shape of blood pressure distribution to worldwide trends and variations in raised blood pressure: A pooled analysis of 1018…

2018

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean dia…

Tube transport of water vapor with condensation and desorption

2013

Attenuation and delay of active tracers in tube transport is an important current problem, but its full explanation is still lacking. To this end a model is introduced, where part of a tracer undergoes condensation and evaporation, treated as a diffusion-type process, in addition to Taylor dispersion. Condensation of water was verified by high-speed imaging, and the model solution fitted the breakthrough curves of laboratory measurements with pulses of water vapor of varying relative humidity. The model provides a transfer function whose performance was verified against field measurements. peerReviewed

A new species of Silene sect. Dipterosperma (Caryophyllaceae) from Sicily

2012

Silene kemoniana, a new species of the section Dipterosperma from NW Sicily, is described and illustrated. It is a therophyte that occurs in mountains near Palermo, where it grows on Mesozoic limestones in xerophilous garigues. Its relationships with S. colorata and allied species are also examined. A key of the species belonging to sect. Dipterosperma is provided. Cytotaxonomical investigation on Allium paniculatum ssp. exaltatum (Alliaceae) from Cyprus.

2004

Arare Allium endemic to Cyprus island, known as A. paniculatum subsp. exaltatum, is here examined. Relevant features in its morphology, caryology and leaf anatomy emphasize the marked taxonomic isolation of this taxon and allow it to be treated as a distinct species, proposed as Allium exaltatum. It is an exaploid plant (2n=48), probably arisen out of allopolyploidy and morphologically related only to some Middle East taxa.

Diversity in the population of Brassica incana Ten. (Cruciferae) in Sicily

2014

henotipic diversity in Sicilian populations of Brassica incana Ten. (Cruciferae) is here ana- lyzed in comparison with the only one known population of B. raimondoi Sciandrello et al., taxonomic close species recently described from the coastal relief of eastern Sicily. The analysis of diagnostic characters of these two taxa does not reveal significant differences that justify a treatment at species level of the population of B. raimondoi. On this base, the authors deemed to include this taxon in the infraspecific variability of B. incana and consider most appropriate the rank of subspecies. Therefore is here proposed the establishment of the trinomial com- bination B. incana subsp. raimond…

Neotrinia gen. nov. and Pennatherum sect. nov.in Achnatherum (Poaceae: Stipeae)

2019

Stipa splendens (syn. Achnatherum splendens) has been transferred to Neotrinia (Tzvelev) M. Nobis, P. Gudkovaet A. Nowak gen. nov.as N. splendens (Trin.) M. Nobis, P. Gudkova et A. Nowak, based on a comparison of the macromorphology and lemma micromorphology of the Asian representatives of the tribe Stipeae. Lemma epidermal patterns in the examined species are presented and discussed. Additionally, a new section Pennatherum M. Nobis comprising Achnatherum pelliotii, a species recently transferred to Achnatherum from Ptilagrostis is also proposed. This taxon clearly differs from Ptilagrostis by the lemma micromorphology. The species with typical maize-like lemma micromorphological pattern is…

Chemical composition of the essential oil of Elaeoselinum asclepium (L.) Bertol subsp. meoides (Desf.) Fiori (Umbelliferae) collected wild in Central…

2020

In the present study, the chemical composition of the essential oils from flowers and leaves of Elaeoselinum asclepium(L.) Bertol subsp. meoides(Desf.) Fiori collected in Central Sicily was evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main volatile components of the flowers were alpha-phellandrene (42.5%), terpinolene (15.7%), p-cymene (11.6%) and beta-phellandrene (10.2%), whereas the ones of the leaves were p-cymene (44.0%), alpha-pinene (13.2%), alpha-phellandrene (11.0%), beta-phellandrene (10.2%) and beta-pinene (9.2%). Furthermore, the antibacterial and antifungal activities against some microorganisms infesting historical art craft were determined. The essential oil from leaves (EL) showed to be p…

Efficient techniques for fault detection and location of multiple controlled Toffoli-based reversible circuit

2021

It is very important to detect and correct faults for ensuring the validity and reliability of these circuits. In this regard, a comparative study with related existing techniques is undertaken. Two techniques to achieve the testability of reversible circuits are introduced that have been improved in terms of quantum cost and fault coverage rate. Considering this aspect, the main focus of these techniques is on the efficient detection and location of faults with 100% accuracy. These techniques for fault detection in reversible circuit design, in addition to being able to produce the correct outputs, can also provide information for fault location that has already been done at a higher cost.…
