Susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to ceftazidime is unrelated to the expression of the outer membrane protein OprC.
1997
Previously, it has been postulated that the porin OprC facilitates the diffusion of ceftazidime through the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. To further investigate this claim, the outer membrane protein (OMP) profiles of 22 ceftazidime-susceptible clinical isolates were analyzed. No correlation was found between MIC values and the level of expression of OprC. Further, OprC was either undetectable or expressed in reduced amounts in 12 isolates. In contrast, OprF and OprE were present in all isolates studied. This study suggests that OprC is dispensable for the permeation of ceftazidime through the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa.
Il chiostro del Duomo di Cefalù tra storiografia e restauri
2011
This essay attempts to reconstruct the history of the monument during the years between the fifties and sixties, where the many initiatives taken for their protection, were unable to 'save' for the inability, by different actors to decide among the possible choices. It also the first attempt to reflect on what action was proposed and partially built by Armando Dillon.
Validation of a high-performance chromatographic method for determination of cefotaxime in biological samples
1999
An analytical method for detecting and quantifying cefotaxime in plasma and several tissues is described. The method was developed and validated using plasma and tissues of rats. The samples were analyzed by reversed phase liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection (254 nm). Calibration graphs showed a linear correlation (r > 0.999) over the concentration ranges of 0.5–200 μg/mL and 1.25–25 μg/g for plasma and tissues, respectively. The recovery of cefotaxime from plasma standards prepared at the concentrations of 25 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL was 98.5 ± 3.5% and 101.8 ± 2.2%, respectively. The recovery of cefotaxime from tissue standards of liver, fat and muscle, prepared at the concentration…
Comparative Study on the Determination of Cephalexin in its Dosage Forms by Spectrophotometry and HPLC with UV-vis Detection
1997
This paper discusses the spectrophotometric determination of cephalexin as the intact cephalexin or as its acid-induced degradation product. Cephalexin can be determined in the range 1 × 10−5−18 × 10−5M with relative standard deviations of 5-1%. The limits of quantitation and detection were 10−5 and 0.3 × 10−5M, respectively. These procedures were compared with reversed-phase HPLC determination. No interference was observed in the presence of common pharmaceutical adjuvants. The H-point standard additions method was applied in order to correct for the possible presence of the cephalexin precursor, 7-aminocephalosporanic acid; this improves the selectivity of the UV-vis spectrophotometric me…
A comparison of various calibration techniques applied to the ninhydrin-cefoxitin determination
1996
Abstract This report deals with spectrophotometric determination of cefoxitin from intact antibiotics or from its acid induced degradation product by means of their reaction with ninhydrin in a strong sulphuric acid medium. To obtain the calibration graphs four methods were used: absorbance of reacted cefoxitin against a reagent blank as an analytical signal, first-derivative signal of absorbance against a water blank as an analytical signal, first-derivative signal of absorbance against a reagent blank as an analytical signal and the H-Point Standard Additions Method (HPSAM) by using absorbance increment values as analytical signals. The HPSAM is applied to the determination of cefoxitin i…
Assessing interactional skills in a paired speaking test : raters’ interpretation of the construct
2019
The operationalization of interactional competence (IC) within the paired speaking test format allows for a range of interactional skills to be tested. However, in terms of assessment, challenges are posed with regard to the co-constructed nature of IC, making investigations into raters’ perceptions of the construct essential to inform test score interpretation. This qualitative study explores features of IC that raters attended to as they evaluated performances in a paired speaking test, part of a Swedish national test of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Two groups of raters, 17 EFL teachers from Sweden, using national standards based on the Common European Framework of Reference for L…
Use your languages! : From monolingual to multilingual interaction in a language class
2015
This reflective paper presents a new course concept for multilingual interaction, which was piloted at the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre in the spring of 2014. The course, implemented as part of the centre’s action research, is the result of a development process aimed at enhancing students’ multilingual and multicultural academic communication competences along with promoting use of their entire linguistic repertoire. The course concept was inspired by the EU project Modularising Multilingual and Multicultural Academic Communication Competence (MAGICC), whose main intent is “to integrate multilingual and multicultural academic communication competences as graduate learning outcom…
Developing a conceptual framework : the case of MAGICC
2015
This paper reports the steps taken to develop the conceptual framework of the MAGICC project (2013), which aimed to provide action-oriented descriptions of multilingual and multicultural academic and professional communication competence, instructional designs to promote these in higher education language teaching, and multidimensional forms of assessment aligned with the learning outcomes established – all presented in an academic ePortfolio that expands the features of the existing European Language Portfolio (ELP) to the higher education level. “Starting with systematic desk research into the existing conceptualisations of multi/plurilingual and multi/ intercultural competences as well a…
How Do We Know If There’s a Message?
2010
As we have seen, radio waves can be excellent candidates for interplanetary communication, due to the fact that our galaxy is transparent to them. The problem lies in properly identifying the origin – artificial or natural – of an arriving signal. When we tune a radio receiver and we turn the antenna toward the cosmos, we gather hundreds of different signals. Even some of the natural signals are quite suggestive, and one can be tempted to consider them emissions from other civilizations.
La miniera dell'architettura
2010
The essay traces the main events and themes of the journal « In Architettura. Il giornale della progettazione» founded in Cefalù by Pasquale Culotta. Up until 1993, the year of publication of the last issue, the periodical represented a precious place for debate and comparison, a tool for questioning oneself on the profession of architect, on the sense of doing and teaching, as well as than an opportunity to establish contacts with distant realities, making the young Sicilian architecture an internationally known avant-garde.
