Highly efficient transport of carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester into COS7 cells using human papillomavirus-like particles
2003
AbstractHuman papillomavirus virus-like particles (VLPs) have recently been used to deliver genes into mammalian cells in vitro and in vivo. Here, we investigated whether VLPs may serve as an efficient carrier of low molecular weight compounds (e.g. hormones, vitamins, peptides etc.) into cells. COS7 cells were incubated with recombinant HPV-16L1/L2 VLPs labelled with the fluorescence dye carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester. Using flow cytometry, we demonstrate that labelled VLPs can specifically bind to the cell surface followed by their complete internalisation. Our results indicate that VLPs are promising vehicles for highly efficient delivery of low molecular weight compound…
Content, cost, and context: A framework for understanding human signaling systems
2019
Humans frequently perform extravagant and seemingly costly behaviors, such as widely sharing hunted resources, erecting conspicuous monumental structures, and performing dramatic acts of religious devotion. Evolutionary anthropologists and archeologists have used signaling theory to explain the function of such displays, drawing inspiration from behavioral ecology, economics, and the social sciences. While signaling theory is broadly aimed at explaining honest communication, it has come to be strongly associated with the handicap principle, which proposes that such costly extravagance is in fact an adaptation for signal reliability. Most empirical studies of signaling theory have focused on…
Experimental testing of phase change materials in a warm-summer humid continental climate
2019
Abstract The construction industry (and buildings) is one of the largest energy consuming and CO2 emitting sectors in the world. To counter this, more lightweight structures are being used and energy saving applications are being developed. Phase change materials (PCM) are materials that can be considered to tackle these new challenges. It has been proven that PCMs can be passively used to improve the thermal mass of lightweight structures, which improves thermal comfort and reduces peak cooling and heating loads and therefore provides energy savings. To use these materials in an active way, they should be used together with ventilation, cooling or heating equipment, and collectors to accum…
Data Mining Technique (Maximum Entropy Model) for Mapping Gully Erosion Susceptibility in the Gorganrood Watershed, Iran
2019
Soil erosion is a serious problem affecting most of the countries. This study was carried out in Gorganrood Watershed (Iran), which extends for 10,197 km2 and is severely affected by gully erosion. A gully headcut inven- tory map consisting of 307 gully headcut points was provided by Google Earth images, field surveys, and national reports. Gully conditioning factors including sig- nificant geo-environmental and morphometric variables were selected as predictors. Maximum entropy (ME) model was exploited to model gully susceptibility, whereas the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and draw- ing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were employed to evaluate the performance of the model.…
Assessment of Gully Erosion Susceptibility Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines and Accounting for Terrain Connectivity
2017
In this work, we assessed gully erosion susceptibility in two adjacent cultivated catchments of Sicily (Italy) by employing multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) and a set of geo-environmental variables. To explore the influence of hydrological connectivity on gully occurrence we measured the changes of performance occurred when adding one by one nine predictors reflecting terrain connectivity to a base model that included contributing area and slope gradient. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) were used to evaluate models performance. Gully predictive models were trained in both the catchments and submitted to internal (in the ca…
Statistical learning and multiple linear regression model for network selection using MIH
2014
Award of Appreciation; International audience; A key requirement to provide seamless mobility and guaranteeing Quality of Service in heterogeneous environment is to select the best destination network during handover. In this paper, we propose a new schema for network selection based on Multiple Linear Regression Model (MLRM). A horough investigation, on a huge live data collected from GPRS/UMTS networks led to identify the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that play the most important role in the handover process. These KPIs are: Received Signal Code Power (RSCP), received energy per chip (Ec/No) and Available Bandwidth (ABW) of the destination network. To extract a handover model from col…

Masteroppgave i helse- og sosialinformatikk HSI500 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 Using electronic messages is a necessary tool for healthcare providers to be able to perform their work more efficiently. Regarding this, it is very important to maintain an overview and control of the messages that is transmitted between the participants. In order to ensure that a business has procedures for handling application receipts related to electronic messaging, there is a regulatory requirement for how the business should perform this work, both organizational and technical. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into how doctor’s offices in Agder comply with the requirements imposed by the Norwe…
A Magnetic Resonance Imaging–Based Prediction Model for Prostate Biopsy Risk Stratification
2018
IMPORTANCE: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in conjunction with MRI–transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) fusion-guided biopsies have improved the detection of prostate cancer. It is unclear whether MRI itself adds additional value to multivariable prediction models based on clinical parameters. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an MRI-based prediction model can reduce unnecessary biopsies in patients with suspected prostate cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients underwent MRI, MRI-TRUS fusion-guided biopsy, and 12-core systematic biopsy in 1 session. The development cohort used to derive the prediction model consisted of 400 patients from 1 institution enrolled between …
