Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhosis;survival rate and prognostic factors
2010
Background: The role of prognostic variables in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is controversial. Aims: To evaluate the survival of patients with HCC on cirrhosis treated with TACE and to analyse the prognostic factors affecting survival. Methods: From 1996 to 2006, 580 consecutive patients with HCC in cirrhosis were observed. Of these 194 patients underwent TACE. The primary end-point was survival. Independent predictors of survival were identified using the Cox model. Results: The cumulative 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates were 96%, 60%, and 41%, respectively. The multivariate analysis showed significant reduction of surv…
HYALURONIC ACID DERIVATIVE MICELLES AS OCULAR PLATFORMS TO DRUG RELEASE AND CORNEAL PERMEATION
2016
In traditional ocular formulations, only small amount of the administered drug penetrates the cornea to reach the intraocular tissue. One approach to improve the drug ocular bioavailability was to develop colloidal drug delivery systems. Polymeric micelles seem to be very promising for their capacity to dissolve a variety of hydrophobic drugs by enhancing their water solubility and so their bioavailability. They are able to increase ocular drug permeability due to interact with the complex corneal structure. Considering the advantages to use mucoadhesive polymer to increase drug residence time on the ocular surface, the aim of this work was to prepare hyaluronic acid-based micelles as a pla…
Extracellular Vesicle microRNAs Contribute to the Osteogenic Inhibition of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Multiple Myeloma
2020
Osteolytic bone disease is the major complication associated with the progression of multiple myeloma (MM). Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as mediators of MM-associated bone disease by inhibiting the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Here, we investigated a correlation between the EV-mediated osteogenic inhibition and MM vesicle content, focusing on miRNAs. By the use of a MicroRNA Card, we identified a pool of miRNAs, highly expressed in EVs, from MM cell line (MM1.S EVs), expression of which was confirmed in EVs from bone marrow (BM) plasma of patients affected by smoldering myeloma (SMM) and MM. Notably,we found that miR-129-5p, whic…
Improving Estimates Accuracy of Voter Transitions. Two New Algorithms for Ecological Inference Based on Linear Programming
2022
The estimation of RxC ecological inference contingency tables from aggregate data is one of the most salient and challenging problems in the field of quantitative social sciences, with major solutions proposed from both the ecological regression and the mathematical programming frameworks. In recent decades, there has been a drive to find solutions stemming from the former, with the latter being less active. From the mathematical programming framework, this paper suggests a new direction for tackling this problem. For the first time in the literature, a procedure based on linear programming is proposed to attain estimates of local contingency tables. Based on this and the homogeneity hypot…
