The insect immune system has versatile ways of coping with microbial insults. Currently, innate immune priming has been described in several invertebrates, and the first insights into its mechanistic basis have been described. Here we studied infections with two different strains of Serratia marcescens bacteria in two different Lepidopteran hosts. The results reveal fundamental differences between the two hosts, a well-known model organism Galleria mellonella and a non-model species Arctia plantaginis. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents 80% of the primary hepatic neoplasms. It is the sixth most frequent neoplasm, the fourth cause of cancer-related death, and 7% of registered malignancies. Sorafenib is the first line molecular targeted therapy for patients in advanced stage of HCC. The present study shows that Sorafenib exerts free radical scavenging properties associated with the downregulation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-regulated thioredoxin 1 (Trx1) expression in liver cancer cells. The low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1, LRP1, interacts with APP and affects its processing. This is assumed to be mostly caused by the impact of LRP1 on APP endocytosis. Fast excitatory transmission at synapses of the central nervous system is mainly mediated by AMPA receptors (AMPARs). Synaptic AMPAR number and function correlates with synaptic strength. AMPARs are thus key proteins of activity-dependent plasticity in neuronal communication. Dendritic cells (DCs) express the ecto-5′-nucleotidase CD73 that generates immunosuppressive adenosine (Ado) by dephosphorylation of extracellular Ado monophosphate and diphosphate. To investigate whether CD73-derived Ado has immune-suppressive activity, 2,4-dinitrothiocyanobenzene (DNTB) was applied to skin of wild-type (WT) or CD73-deficient (CD73–/–) mice, followed by sensitization and challenge with 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene. In this model, we show the induction of tolerance by DNTB against 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene only in WT but not in CD73–/– mice. Here, we studied the potential role of inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) as an energy source for ADP and ATP formation in the extracellular space. In SaOS-2 cells, we show that matrix vesicles are released into the extracellular space after incubation with polyP. These vesicles contain both alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and adenylate kinase (AK) activities (mediated by ALPL and AK1 enzymes). Both enzymes translocate to the cell membrane in response to polyP. To distinguish the process(es) of AMP and ADP formation during ALP hydrolysis from the ATP generated via the AK reaction, inhibition studies with the AK inhibitor A(5')P5(5')A were performed. Abstract 17β-Estradiol (E2) suppresses the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) through estrogen receptor (ER) α, yet the cellular targets remain elusive. We have used an adoptive transfer model of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein–specific CD4+ T cells from 2D2 TCR transgenic mice. We show that in the recipient mice, ERα expression in bystander CD4+ T cells, rather than in cognate 2D2 T cells, is required for the inhibition of Th17 cell differentiation by E2. Coadministration of estrogen-primed WT, but not ERα-deficient CD4+ T cells, with naive 2D2 T cells lacking ERα inhibited the development of Th17 cell–mediated EAE.
