Gel-electrophoretic description of European populations ofTerellia virens (Loew) (Diptera, Tephritidae); implications for its use as an agent for the…

1991

Allozyme frequencies of 15 enzyme loci, 14 of which were polymorphic, were used to characterize sevenTerellia virens populations originating from three allopatrically distributedCentaurea species. The two populations whose origins were geographically furthest apart, from Israel (onC. iberica) and from Switzerland (onC. vallesiaca), showed relatively high values of genetic distance from the 5 populations sampled in Austria and Hungary (onC. maculosa) (Nei's D>0.07). The latter five displayed a high degree of genetic similarity. No diagnostic (fixed) allelic differences were observed between these three groups ofT. virens populations, but they could be well characterized by significant differ…

A model for the cortical reaction of fertilization in the sea-urchin egg.

1953

1954

The cycless musselsAnodonta cygnea andPseudanodonta complanata do not show any phototaxis. In the “Zweilichterversuch” (two-light-experiment) they react to the decrease of light intensity. If light is increasing, the mussels will not react; if put in the shade, they immediately do so. If the shadow is moved, the mussels even react when the intensity of light decreases much less, which demonstrates the importance of motion. From this it follows that the reception of motion may be considered as possible where there is light sensitiveness of the skin, and where the experiment connects motion with shading.

Intranukleäre virusähnliche Partikeln in einem Mammakarzinom

1969

By electron microscopic examination of a solid, chiefly scirrhous mammary cancer, 3 kinds of unusual nuclear inclusions were found: (a) Electron dense particles of a 54–80 nm diameter, whose outlines appear mainly hexagonal, which points at an icosahedral structure, (b) Clusters of granules with a diameter of 200–300a, respectively 300–400a, at whose circumference the larger particles appear, (c) Bundles of filaments in close association and continuous with the granules. In all 3 nuclear inclusions there are subunits of 40–45a. The comparison between these results and experiments published suggest that these nuclear inclusions are (a) virus particles, (b) virus at an early stage of developm…

The effect of sea water on cytochrome oxidase and oxidative phosphorylation.

1961

1971

Different stages of brain evolution expressed by the allometric relation of3√ brain capacity and basal length of the skull are shown to be existent in the speciesPanthera leo. Whereas Asiatic lions obviously have the same level of brain size as leopards (Panthera pardus), African lions have higher brain capacities. A third level seems to be represented by the upper pleistocene American lion,Panthera leo atrox. These results permit us to reject some conceptions ofHerre andRohrs13 concerning the quantitative expression of mammalian brain evolution.

Rolipram inhibits leukocyte-endothelial cell interactionsin vivothrough P- and E-selectin downregulation

2002

1. Rolipram, a selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) type 4 inhibitor, was used to characterize leukocyte recruitment mechanisms in models of acute and subacute inflammation. Intravital microscopy within the rat mesenteric microcirculation was employed. 2. Mesentery superfusion with PAF (0.1 microM) induced a significant increase in leukocyte rolling flux, adhesion and emigration at 60 min. Rolipram pretreatment, markedly inhibited these parameters by 100, 95 and 95% respectively. 3. Similar effects were observed when the mesentery was superfused with LPS (1 microg ml(-1)) for the same time period and these leukocyte parameters were nearly abrogated by rolipram pretreatment. 4. LPS exposure of …

Trypsin sensitivity of some proteins of the sea-urchin egg before and after fertilization an electrophoretic analysis

1955

Two different aggregation principles in reaggregation process of dissociated sponge cells (Geodia cydonium)

1974

Swelling properties of the mitochondria of unfertilized and newly fertilized sea urchin eggs

1957
