Muscle ultrasonography and computed tomography in elderly trained and untrained women

Ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) were compared in studying the associations between long-term physical training and quadriceps muscle mass and structure in female athletes and controls, aged 66-85 years. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) measured using US correlated highly with that measured using CT, but the latter technique yielded 30% higher values on average. The echo intensity of the fasciae and bone measured by US correlated positively with the mean radiological density and negatively with the relative proportion of fat obtained from CT. Abstract Proprioceptive paired-stimulus paradigm was used for 30 children (10–17 years) and 21 adult (25–45 years) volunteers in magnetoencephalography (MEG). Their right index finger was moved twice with 500-ms interval every 4 ± 25 s (repeated 100 times) using a pneumatic-movement actuator. Spatial-independent component analysis (ICA) was applied to identify stimulus-related components from MEG cortical responses. Clustering was used to identify spatiotemporally consistent components across subjects. Dependence of T-lymphocyte activation on the extent of cellular damage

Mechanically damaged cells release intracellular substances, resulting in the activation of CD4- and CD8-positive T-lymphocytes. The goal of this investigation was to quantify and compare fractions of activated CD4- and CD8-positive T-lymphocytes, based on the quantity of damaged cells in a given blood sample. Blood samples were mechanically stressed by vortexing intensely. Subsequently, different quantities of distressed blood samples were mixed with samples of fresh, whole blood. Monoclonal antibody TeM 106 reacts with a tonoplast intrinsic protein of 106 kDa from Brassica oleracea L

A monoclonal antibody, designated TeM 106, that recognizes an intrinsic protein from the vacuole membrane (tonoplast) of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) is described. Mice were immunized with a tonoplast fraction that had been purified from differentiating meristematic cells from the cauliflower head. Hybridomas were generated and screened by means of Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assays for differential reactivity to tonoplast over non-related proteins (bovine serum albumin). Analysis of liver-specific protein LSP using murine monoclonal antibodies.

. We describe twenty murine monoclonal antibodies directed against different antigenic determinants of human and rabbit liver-specific protein LSP. Among them, nine were directed against liver-specific epitopes as judged from immunohistological studies. Immunoelectronmicroscopy revealed that seven of these monoclonals recognized membrane determinants differing in staining of distinct areas of the hepatocellular surface. Eleven antibodies were directed against intracellular structures. Mechanisms of arachidonic acid induced glial swelling

Accumulation of arachidonic acid (AA) in the brain during ischaemia may contribute to development of brain oedema. In this study we investigated the effect of selected drugs on AA-induced cytotoxic brain oedema in C6 glioma cells. Suspended C6 glioma cells were preincubated with drugs and AA (0.1 mM) was added. When no drug was administered cell volume increased immediately after the addition of AA with a maximum cell swelling of 13.1+/-1.9% at 15 min (mean +/- S.E. M.).
