Abstract Cerium dioxide (CeO2) presents unique properties as the special electronic and optical properties of the 4f electrons, the capacity to form nonstoichiometric oxygen-deficient CeO2 − x oxides, the high oxygen mobility, and the reversible transformation between Ce4 + and Ce3 + that make it interesting for photocatalytic applications. CeO2 is a wide bandgap semiconductor (3.0–3.4 eV), but different approaches as combination with oxides, deposition of noble metals, doping with metal and nonmetal species, and the formation of surface defects have been adopted to extend its absorption towards the visible region with the aim to improve its photocatalytic performance. Under the right conditions, dermoscopy allows us to observe the vascular features of many different types of skin lesions. The visualization and identification of vessels with a characteristic morphology can be the key to diagnosis, especially in hypopigmented lesions in which the typical pigmented structures are not visible. Some of the more characteristic associations are the presence of crown vessels in sebaceous hyperplasia, arborizing telangiectasias in basal cell carcinoma, comma-shaped vessels in intra- dermal and compound nevi, dotted vessels in Spitz nevi and melanoma, and hairpin vessels in seborrheic keratoses. Tithonia oxfordiana, a new irregular echinoid associated with Jurassic seep deposits in south-east France

The infaunal irregular echinoid, Tithonia oxfordiana, is described and compared to congeneric species previously described from Upper Jurassic and lowermost Cretaceous strata. This new species characterizes a monospecific echinoid assemblage, which occurs only in some places where deep-marine middle Oxfordian deposits are exposed in south-east France. Specimens are closely packed and clearly concentrated at the top of small carbonate chemoherms; a close connection of the echinoids with the emission of reduced chemicals, which were oxidized by chemoautotrophic bacteria, is highly probable. Sixteen species of Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes were found and described on litter of Mediterranean maquis at Circeo National Park; three of them are proposed as new species: Dictyochaeta cicei, Circinotrichum mediterraneum and Penzigomyces ilicis.

Cretaceous slopes are well known from many regions of the world, since they are among the most prone depositional systems to host hydrocarbons. As far as Italy, in spite of fully described examples as the Majella and Gargano escarpments, detailed sedimentological and biostratigraphic studies from Sicily are not available, although the presence of slope carbonates of Cretaceous age in northwestern Sicily, is mentioned in several papers dealing with regional geology or geological mapping. AbstractGladius-bearing coleoids are rare in the fossil record. For the Cretaceous period, these cephalopods are mainly recorded in a few Lagerstätten in Lebanon (Haqel, Hajoula, En Nammoura, and Sahel Aalma). Here, we study 16 specimens of gladius-bearing coleoids from these Upper Cretaceous Lebanese Lagerstätten to investigate their taxonomic diversity. Besides two species that were already reported (Dorateuthis syriacaandGlyphiteuthis libanotica), one new species is identified in the Cenomanian site of Hajoula:Rachiteuthis acutalin. sp., as well as another form ofGlyphiteuthisfrom En Nammoura. We report some large ornithopod vertebrae from two upper Hauterivian-lower Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) localities in El Castellar (Maestrazgo Basin, Teruel,Spain).These fossils have been studied systematically as well as morphometrically using a multivariate analysis in order to analyse the diversity of the sample. In fact, principal component analysis has been demonstrated as a useful tool for establishing affinities in isolated iguanodontian vertebrae, at least when size effect is not removed from the analysed dataset.
