Rationale, design and baseline characteristics of the MyoVasc study: A prospective cohort study investigating development and progression of heart fa…

2020

Abstract Background Heart failure (HF) is a poly-aetiological syndrome with large heterogeneity regarding clinical presentation, pathophysiology, clinical outcome and response to therapy. The MyoVasc study (NCT04064450) is an epidemiological cohort study investigating the development and progression of HF. Methods The primary objective of the study is (a) to improve the understanding of the pathomechanisms of HF across the full spectrum of clinical presentation, (b) to investigate the current clinical classifications of HF, and (c) to identify and characterize homogeneous subgroups regarding disease development using a systems-oriented approach. Worsening of HF, that is, the composite of tr…

Effects of sex on naevus body distribution and melanoma risk in two melanoma case-control studies at different latitudes

2016

Naevus count is the most predictable phenotypic risk factor for melanoma and is mainly influenced by genetic factors1,2,3. Melanoma disparities according to gender have been reported in many studies in term of body distribution, survival and to a lesser extent incidence1,2. It is well established that women are more likely to get melanoma on the lower limbs, whilst men are more prone to melanoma on the trunk. In this study, we explore the effects of gender on the distribution of naevi on the body in melanoma cases and controls from different latitudes and whether the odds ratios for melanoma associated with naevi at different body sites are affected by gender. Two case control studies are c…

The mechanical efficiency of locomotion in men and women with special emphasis on stretch-shortening cycle exercises.

1986

The mechanical efficiency of the leg extensor musculature of men and women was examined with a special "sledge ergometer". The subjects (ten males and ten females) performed pure positive work, pure negative work and a combination of negative and positive work (stretch-shortening cycle). The mechanical efficiency of pure positive work was on average 19.8 +/- 1.2% for female subjects and 17.4 +/- 1.2% for male subjects (t = 4.12, P less than 0.001), although the work intensity was equal in both groups. The mechanical efficiency of pure negative work was slightly lower in women than in men (59.3 +/- 14.4% vs 75.6 +/- 29.3%). The mechanical efficiency of positive work (eta +) in a stretch-shor…

Associations of low back pain with neck pain: a study of industrial employees with 5-, 10-, and 28-year follow-ups.

2007

Low back pain (LBP) and neck pain (NP) are common among the adult population but relatively few reports exist on the associations between these. We examined cross-sectional and prospective relationships of LBP with NP in an employee cohort studied repeatedly over 28 years. Locally perceived pain was studied separately from pain with a radiating component. At baseline, adjusted for age, gender, and occupational class, the prevalence ratio (PR) of local NP for those with local LBP was 1.93 (95% CI 1.47–2.54), and for those with radiating LBP 2.16 (1.59–2.94), while the PR of radiating NP for those with local LBP was 1.51 (0.97–2.35) and for those with radiating LBP 3.24 (2.25–4.65). These ass…

The effects of short-term resistance training on endocrine function in men and women.

1998

This investigation examined hormonal adaptations to acute resistance exercise and determined whether training adaptations are observed within an 8-week period in untrained men and women. The protocol consisted of a 1-week pre-conditioning orientation phase followed by 8 weeks of heavy resistance training. Three lower-limb exercises for the quadriceps femoris muscle group (squat, leg press, knee extension) were performed twice a week (Monday and Friday) with every other Wednesday used for maximal dynamic 1 RM strength testing. Blood samples were obtained pre-exercise (Pre-Ex), immediately post-exercise (IP), and 5 min post-exercise (5-P) during the first week of training (T-1), after 6 weeks…

Design and Baseline Characteristics of the HELP Study: An Extended and Long-Term Observation of Pathological Myopia in Caucasians.

2017

<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> To assess the natural disease progression of high myopia in Caucasians considered at risk for the development of myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Subjects were recruited in 25 clinical sites between June 2014 and June 2016. Main inclusion criteria included axial length of ≥26 mm, best-corrected visual acuity ≥0.05 decimal equivalent and presence of at least one out of five predefined morphological disease risk criteria. These were (1) subfoveal choroidal thinning < 50 µm, (2) enhanced choroidal curvature length > 6,300 µm, (3) lacquer cracks, (4) patchy atrophy &#x3…

Waist circumference and BMI are independently associated with the variation of cardio-respiratory and neuromuscular fitness in young adult men.

2006

To test two hypotheses: (1) cardiorespiratory (CRF) and neuromuscular (NMF) fitness is associated with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), independent of each other and of leisure-time physical activity; (2) individuals with high CRF and NMF have lower WC for a given BMI, compared with those with low CRF and NMF. Cross-sectional study. Men participating in refresher training organized by the Finnish Defence Forces. A total of 951 men (mean age 29.1, s.d. 4.2 years; BMI 25.3 kg/m2, s.d. 3.8; WC 91, s.d. 11 cm). Body mass index, WC, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), height of vertical jump, number of push-ups and sit-ups during a 1-min test, static back extension endurance, isom…

Gender-specific anthropometric markers of adiposity, metabolic syndrome and visceral adiposity index (VAI) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

2013

Obstructive sleep apnea often coexists with visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome. In this study, we analysed gender-related differences in anthropometrics according to sleep apnea severity and metabolic abnormalities. In addition, the visceral adiposity index, a recently introduced marker of cardiometabolic risk, was analysed. Consecutive subjects with suspected obstructive sleep apnea (n = 528, 423 males, mean age ± standard deviation: 51.3 ± 12.8 years, body mass index: 31.0 ± 6.2 kg m(-2) ) were studied by full polysomnography (apnea-hypopnea index 43.4 ± 27.6 h(-1) ). Variables of general and visceral adiposity were measured (body mass index, neck, waist and hip circumferences, wai…

Neuromuscular fatigue and recovery in male and female athletes during heavy resistance exercise.

1993

To examine neuromuscular fatigue and recovery ten male and nine female athletes performed a strenuous heavy resistance exercise protocol. The subjects strained their leg extensor muscles with the same maximal relative intensity by performing one maximal squat-lift with a load of 100% of 1 RM (one repetition maximum) 20 times (20 x 1 x 100%). Maximal voluntary neural activation (integrated EMG), maximal bilateral isometric force, force-time and relaxation-time curves of the leg extensor muscles were measured before and immediately after the exercise session as well as after resting for 1 hour, 2 hours, 1 day and 2 days. The session resulted in considerable gradual decreases in maximal force …

Sex differences in allelic frequencies of the 5-HT2C Cys23Ser polymorphism in psychiatric patients and healthy volunteers: findings from an associati…

2000

Polymorphisms in the serotonergic system are believed to play a role in the etiology and treatment of different psychiatric illnesses. The 5-HT2C receptor gene is X-linked, with a frequent mutation at nucleotide 68 leading to a Ser-->Cys transition at amino acid 23. Recent studies have demonstrated an impaired function of 5-HT2C receptors and an increased production of the major noradrenergic metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol in the cerebrospinal fluid among the subjects carrying the Ser23 allele (Lappalainen et al., 1999). Biol. Psychiatry 46:821). We genotyped patients with alcohol dependence, panic disorder without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, narcolepsy an…
