Molybdenum blue: Binding to collagen fibres and microcrystal formation

2005

Collagen fibres have been shown by transmission electron microscopy to progressively bind the polyoxomolybdate ring-complex, termed molybdenum blue. Nucleation of cuboidal molybdenum blue microcrystals occurs on the surface of the collagen fibres, leading eventually to extensive coating of the fibres with microcrystals.

Hydrodesulfurization cobalt-based catalysts modified by gold

2007

Cobalt catalysts supported on amorphous SiO2 and ordered mesoporous silica (MCM-41) were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. Gold was added by consecutive impregnation or by co-impregnation. The materials were characterised by XPS, XRD and TPR techniques and evaluated in the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene in order to investigate the effect of the noble metal on the structure and on the catalytic behaviour of the supported cobalt. Co/MCM-41 exhibited higher HDS activity and higher stability than the Co/SiO2. Moreover, in contrast to silica case, the gold impregnated MCM-41, produced an enhancement of the cobalt catalytic activity, and this is likely to be related to an incre…

Optical determination and identification of organic shells around nanoparticles: application to silver nanoparticles

2013

We present a simple method to prove the presence of an organic shell around silver nanoparticles. This method is based on the comparison between optical extinction measurements of isolated nanoparticles and Mie calculations predicting the expected wavelength of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of the nanoparticles with and without the presence of an organic layer. This method was applied to silver nanoparticles which seemed to be well protected from oxidation. Further experimental characterization via Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) measurements allowed to identify this protective shell as ethylene glycol. Combining LSPR and SERS measurements could thus give proof of both …

Production of Phosphorescent Coatings on 6082 Aluminum Using Sr0.95Eu0.02Dy0.03Al2O4-δ Powder and Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation

2019

In this study, a new approach for producing phosphorescent aluminum coatings was studied. Using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process, a porous oxide coating was produced on the Al6082 aluminum alloy substrate. Afterwards, activated strontium aluminate (SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+) powder was filled into the cavities and pores of the PEO coating, which resulted in a surface that exhibits long-lasting luminescence. The structural and optical properties were studied using XRD, SEM, and photoluminescence measurements. It was found that the treatment time affects the morphology of the coating, which influences the amount of strontium aluminate powder that can be incorporated into the coating …

Optical Properties of Natural and Synthetic Minerals

2015

The results of investigation of optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) of topaz, beryl and yttrium aluminium garnet crystals doped with different concentrations of transition ions exposed to fast neutron irradiation and electron irradiation are presented. We suppose that irradiation leads to the formation of two types of complex centers: "Me2+-F+ (or F) centre" and complex centers, which consist of a cation vacancy and an impurity (iron, manganese and chromium) ion. Exchange interaction between radiation defects and impurity ions during neutron or electron irradiation gives rise to appearance of additional absorption and luminescence band broadening in investigated crystals.

Optical Properties of Irradiated Yttrium Aluminum Garnet

2012

The results of investigation of the photoluminescence (PL) and optical absorption of crystals Y3Al5O12(YAG) doped with different concentrations of manganese ions exposed to fast neutron irradiation and electron irradiation are presented. Photoluminescence spectra of YAG before neutron irradiation at T=80 K contain fine lines in orange region of spectrum, ascribed to Mn2+ ions in octahedral position. After irradiation band broadening is observed in the luminescence spectra of garnet crystals. Electron irradiation produced broad band with a complex structure related to Mn4+ ions. Exchange interaction between radiation defect and impurity ions during neutron irradiation and electron irradiatio…

Alanine blends for ESR measurements of thermal neutron fluence in a mixed radiation field

2007

In this paper, the results of a study on the electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry to measure thermal neutron fluence in a mixed radiation field (neutron and photons) are presented. The ESR responses of alanine dosemeters with different additives are compared. In particular, the (10)B-acid boric and the Gd-oxide were chosen to enhance the sensitivity of alanine dosemeters to thermal neutrons. Irradiations were carried out inside the thermal column of the TAPIRO reactor of the ENEA center, Casaccia Rome. The main results are a greater neutron sensitivity and a smaller lowest detectable fluence for the dosemeters with gadolinium than for dosemeters of alanine with (10)B, which is well known…

Amino-Acid-Based Polymerizable Surfactants for the Synthesis of Chiral Nanoparticles

2016

Amino-acid-based chiral surfactants with polymerizable moieties are synthesized, and a versatile approach to prepare particles thereof with a chiral surface functionality is presented. As an example of an application, the synthesized particles are tested for their ability as nucleating agents in the enantioselective crystallization of amino acid conglomerate systems, taking rac-asparagine as a model system. Particles resulting from chiral surfactants with different tail groups are compared and the results demonstrate that only the chiral nanoparticles made of the polymerizable surfactant are able to act efficiently as nucleation agent in enantioselective crystallization.

Measurements on the temperature dependence of the cationic polymerization of styrene in CH2Cl2 with CF3SO3H as catalyst

1979

The cationic polymerization of styrene in CH2Cl2 with CF3SO3H as catalyst and at low monomer concentrations shows, at −15°C, −45°C and −60°C, the same formal dependence on monomer concentration. The dependence on the catalyst concentration is approximately but not exactly of a third order.

Total oxidation of propane using nanocrystalline cobalt oxide and supported cobalt oxide catalysts

2008

Abstract Supported and unsupported nanocrystalline cobalt oxides have been shown to be extremely efficient catalysts for the total oxidation of propane. Total conversion with a high stability has been achieved at reaction temperatures as low as 250 °C. In the present work, a comparison between the catalytic performance of bulk and alumina-supported nanocrystalline cobalt oxide catalysts has been made. The influence of crystallite size, nature of the support (alpha, gamma and mesoporous alumina) and cobalt loading, has been probed. Unsupported cobalt oxide catalysts were more active than any supported cobalt oxide catalysts. The catalytic activity was mainly dependent on the crystallite size…
