Antioxidant Activities and Oxidative Stress Byproducts in Human Hypertension

The objective was to study oxidative status, antioxidant activities, and reactive oxygen species byproducts in whole blood and mononuclear peripherals cells and their relationship with blood pressure. Sixty-six hypertensive patients and 16 normotensive volunteers as a control group were studied. In both, whole blood and peripheral mononuclear cells oxidized/reduced glutathione ratio and malondialdehyde was significantly higher, and the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase was significantly lower in hypertensive patients when compared with normal subjects. Steatosis, or excessive accumulation of lipids in the liver, is a generally accepted previous step to the development of more severe conditions like nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Healon5 versus Viscoat during cataract surgery: intraocular pressure, laser flare and corneal changes

Background: The use of a viscoelastic substance facilitates cataract surgery. Healon 5 is a new viscoelastic product with special rheological properties. We evaluated the postoperative effect of Viscoat and Healon5 on intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), endothelial cell counts and laser flare. In order to further understand neonatal stress and, thus, control it efficaciously, there is a need for more information on the manifestations of stress at the molecular level in the newborn, with particular regard to oxidants, and anti-oxidant and anti-stress mechanisms, including mitochondrial heat shock protein-chaperones such as Hsp60. Deciphering exome sequencing data: Bringing mitochondrial DNA variants to light

The expanding use of exome sequencing (ES) in diagnosis generates a huge amount of data, including untargeted mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences. We developed a strategy to deeply study ES data, focusing on the mtDNA genome on a large unspecific cohort to increase diagnostic yield. A targeted bioinformatics pipeline assembled mitochondrial genome from ES data to detect pathogenic mtDNA variants in parallel with the "in-house" nuclear exome pipeline. mtDNA data coming from off-target sequences (indirect sequencing) were extracted from the BAM files in 928 individuals with developmental and/or neurological anomalies.
