Opioid tolerance and dependence -- do they matter?

2004

The use of opioids has long been accepted as the standard of care in patients with cancer and acute pain. Opioids can further be used effectively in specific subgroups of patients with chronic nonmalignant pain states. While the development of tolerance and physical dependence are known effects of opioids in cancer and noncancer pain populations, these patients can not be regarded as addicted. However, long-term therapy with short-acting opioids predisposes to tolerance and addiction. Recent research has confirmed the important role of psychopathologic and psychosocial conditions as predictors of failed opioid effectiveness in a significant number of noncancer pain subgroups. The clinical p…

Trichoscopy features of trichotillomania

2019

Trichotillomania is a form of traction alopecia resulting from repetitive and compulsive hair pulling and plucking. Trichotillomania and patchy alopecia areata may have similar clinical and dermoscopic features in some cases. On trichoscopic examination, the presence of black dots, coiled or hook hair, shafts of varying lengths with fraying or split ends (trichoptilosis), and an absence of exclamation mark hairs and yellow dots are suggestive of trichotillomania.

CHOP Improves Response Rates but Not Overall Survival in Follicular and Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL)- Results of a Randomized Trial of the German Low G…

2004

Abstract In advanced stage follicular lymphoma conventional chemotherapy is non-curative and no major improvement in overall survival has been achieved by different regimens. Similarly, MCL, a lymphoma subtype with an especially poor clinical outcome, cannot be cured by conventional chemotherapy. In 1996, the German Low Grade Lymphoma Study Group (GLSG) started a randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of two different anthracycline/anthrachinon containing regimens comparing CHOP (cyclophosphamide 750 mg/m2 day 1, vincristine 1.4 mg/m2 day 2, adriamycine 50 mg/m2 day 1, prednisone 100 mg/m2 days 1–5) and MCP (mitoxantrone 8 mg/m2 days 1–2, chlorambucil 3x3 mg/m2 days 1–5; prednisone 25 mg…

Ofatumumab (OFA) in Combination with CHOP for Previously Untreated Follicular Lymphoma: Follow-up Results

2012

Abstract Abstract 1632 Background: OFA is a fully human monoclonal antibody that binds to both the large and small extracellular loops of CD20. OFA is currently approved for patients (pts) with refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia and has demonstrated activity in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, including follicular lymphoma (FL). We previously reported results of a phase II study of OFA in combination with CHOP (cyclophosphamide 750 mg/m2, doxorubicin 50 mg/m2, vincristine 1.4 mg/m2, prednisone 100 mg daily for 5 days) chemotherapy (O-CHOP) in pts with previously untreated FL (Czuczman et al. Br J Haematol. 2012;157:438). We now report updated efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetic (PK) follow-up…

The Mitochondrial Antioxidant SS-31 Modulates Oxidative Stress, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress, and Autophagy in Type 2 Diabetes

2019

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been shown to play a central role in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and mitochondria-targeted agents such as SS-31 are emerging as a promising strategy for its treatment. We aimed to study the effects of SS-31 on leukocytes from T2D patients by evaluating oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and autophagy. Sixty-one T2D patients and 53 controls were included. Anthropometric and analytical measurements were performed. We also assessed reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, calcium content, the expression of ER stress markers GRP78, CHOP, P-eIF2&alpha

No relationship between baseline salivary alpha-amylase and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Score in drug-naïve patients with short-illness-duration fi…

2016

BACKGROUND Salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity alternations are observed in major depressive disorder (MDD) being associated with depression severity and its specific psychopathological dimensions with anxiety being attributed to distress. No data is available on sAA in MDD according to Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The exploratory study examines whether and to what extent baseline sAA level is interrelated to the psychopathological features including severity of symptoms and specific psychopathological dimensions. MATERIAL AND METHODS The basal, non-stimulated sAA activity was studied in 20 non-late-life adult, treatment-naive MDD pa…

188. Does Cannabis Use Worsen Psychotic Symptom Presentation?

2017

Background: While the relationship between cannabis and psychosis is well established, there is a lack of studies into whether cannabis use is associated with a particular pattern of symptoms at psychosis onset. Moreover, there is much evidence that psychotic experiences are common in the healthy population, and again their relationship with exposure to cannabis has been scarcely studied. We hypothesized that psychopathology in first-episode psychosis patients (FEP), and psychotic experiences in controls, would be qualitatively and quantitatively affected by pattern of cannabis use.

Preliminary identification and quantification of steroid hormones in the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus

2012

In the present preliminary study, we used a gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) method to identify and quantify steroid hormones, their precursors and metabolites in whole body of red palm weevil (RPW) R. ferrugineus adults. We identified a total of seven steroids by single ion monitoring mode (SIM) analysis and compared them to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library. The steroids include: dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), estrone, estradiol-17β, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol and cholesterol, whereas pregnenolone, pregnan-20-one-17-hydroxy and corticosterone were not detected. This study shows that some invertebrate groups seem to use partially or tot…

Rituximab in Combination with CHOP in Patients with Follicular Lymphoma: Analysis of Treatment Outcome of 552 Patients Treated in a Randomized Trial …

2008

Abstract We have previously reported that compared to CHOP alone the addition of Rituximab (R) to CHOP significantly increases the response rate (RR), the time to treatment failure (TTF) and also the overall survival (OS) in patients with newly diagnosed advanced follicular lymphoma. However, in the previous report, the median observation time was short with 18 months and no data were reported on the outcome of different risk groups according to the FLIPI (Hiddemann et al., Blood 2005). We now report on the treatment outcome of 552 patients with advanced stage follicular lymphoma randomized between R-CHOP versus CHOP alone after a median follow up of 58 months. Responding patients < …

Color-discrimination threshold determination using pseudoisochromatic test plates

2014

We produced a set of pseudoisochromatic plates for determining individual color-difference thresholds to assess test performance and test properties, and analyzed the results. We report a high test validity and classification ability for the deficiency type and severity level [comparable to that of the fourth edition of the Hardy–Rand–Rittler (HRR) test]. We discuss changes of the acceptable chromatic shifts from the protan and deutan confusion lines along the CIE xy diagram, and the high correlation of individual color-difference thresholds and the red–green discrimination index. Color vision was tested using an Oculus HMC anomaloscope, a Farnsworth D15, and an HRR test on 273 schoolchildr…
