Sterol stability in functional fruit beverages enriched with different plant sterol sources

Abstract Two different plant sterol (PS) sources (free PS from tall oil and esterified PS from vegetable oils) were used for manufacturing two types of functional beverages (fruit and milk-based fruit beverages), and their PS and phytosterol oxidation product (POP) contents were determined. Gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) was used for identification and gas chromatography–flame ionization detection (GC–FID) for quantitation purposes. Brassicasterol, campesterol, campestanol, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol and sitostanol were the quantified PS, conforming a profile in order with current legislation. Abstract The endocannabinoid system serves pivotal roles in a diverse range of physiological and pathophysiological states, including behavior, pain, schizophrenia, obesity, Alzheimer disease, multiple sclerosis and cardiovascular disease. A number of endocannabinoids (eCBs) and their receptors have been characterised and identified in a plethora of biological matrices. By means of data from critical demixing and vapour pressure measurements and by inverse gas chromatography, including the results of published light scattering measurments, a consistent picture is obtained for the entire dependence of the Flory-Huggins parameter χ on the weight fraction w2 of the polymer and on the temperature T for the system tert-butyl acetate/polystyrene. Within the entire T-range (ca. 0°C – 140°C), χ increases stronger than exponentially with w2, the rise being the larger the larger χH (the enthalpy contribution to χ) becomes in the limit of infinite dilution. Application of pressurized fluid extraction to determine cadmium and zinc in plants

Abstract A procedure for the determination of Cd and Zn in plants is proposed. The metals are extracted by pressurized fluid extraction (PFE). Operational conditions are: pressure 1500 psi, temperature 75 °C, static time 5 min, flush volume 35%, purge time 60 s, cycles 1 and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane- N , N , N ′, N ′-tetraacetic acid (CDTA) 0.01 M at pH 4.5 as extracting solution. All-trans to 11-cis retinol isomerization in nuclear membrane fraction from bovine retinal pigment epithelium

Abstract Isomerization of all-trans to 11-cis retinol has been studied in a membrane preparation from the nuclear fraction of bovine retinal pigment epithelium. When the nuclear membrane preparation deprived of endogenous retinoids is incubated with 4·5 μ m all-trans-retinol, the mean value calculated for the isomerase activity is 1·32 nmol 11-cis retinol formed hr−1 mg protein−1. Simultaneous formation of all-trans and 11-cis retinyl esters is also observed in the nuclear preparation. When assayed under the same experimental condition, RPE 150 000 g post-nuclear sediment shows about 70% of the isomerase activity found in the nuclear membrane fraction. Determination of fatty acids and lipid classes in salmon oil by near infrared spectroscopy

International audience; Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was evaluated as a rapid method for the determination of oleic, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids as well as omega-3, omega-6, and to predict polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids, together with triacylglycerides, diglycerides, free fatty acids and ergosterol in salmon oil.
